What Is The Most Expensive Fish You Own / Owned

I've always wanted a cichlid tank but there are so many choices and sooooooooo many rules about mixing different kinds!!!!!!!

I saw a jewel cichlid trying to take out a tank of baby jack demps yesterday..........rather amusing as he kept headbutting the tank side.

Anyway, I paid £16 for my platinum red betta, most amount of dosh on a fish for now.

The male is my Electric Blue Jack Dempsey
The female is a regular strain Jack Dempsey

They are magnificent fish, a little shy and timid but not at all boistrous aside from the odd nip. Amazing fish to keep :)

I dont know too much about them, but i thought they were named Jack Dempsey after the boxer because of there afression?

I have paid more for a java fern than any fish lol, a whole £5!!!!!

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions of the modern era all because of what went on years ago, it was one of the first cichlids discovered many many years ago. Basically, at the time of discovery it was the badest cichlid around and thus it earnt its reputation and name-sake of the Jack Dempsey named after the 30's (i think) boxer a certain Mr Jack Dempsey. Well, since that discovery there have been many more cichlids found in science, and many more aggressive cichlids, so much so that the common Jack Dempsey is really quite timid in comparison. My female is the only boistrous one, the male doesnt give a hoot what goes on in the tank. I kept him with Japonica shrimp and otos and he never bothered, untill i got the female JD, she taught him how to eat them lol. The Electric Blue variant has always been known to be less aggressive than the standard dempsey, and my tank is proof of this.

Good bit of fish trivia there :good:
They can get a bit aggro though, right?
I saw one in a stand off with an oscar a bit bigger than him.... Oscar ran off crying!

£23 for my golden nugget plec he is sooooo pretty or she no idea how to tell if its make or female he sits proud on his bog wood, I so want to buy a zebra plec but I would be mega upset if it died, I will get one when I know my tank is 100% perfect, I almost wet myself when I saw one in life at Maidenhead aquatics weybridge £180 he was soooooo cute, I think I might just fill my tank up with plec's I love them amazing fish!

Paid £55 for my syno angelicus quite a number of years ago. The red cactus plec I had was worth a fair price, especially as an adult and I suspect the EBJD pair are worth a bit too. Nearly bought some syno granulosus this year but the shop was charging £225 each.....decided I wasn't rich enough.

Indeed EBJD pairs are expensive. I payed £25 each for a male and female just over two years ago. I've since lost the female, as with alot of JD's they have health issues when young and she died, however i've since learnt two EBJD breeding WONT create EB fry, so i bought a female JD and now they breed :p

Won't as in can't or won't breed fullstop? Mine are reaching sexual maturity with one much bigger than the other despite being the same when bought last year. They have a fave corner of the tank where they hang out together. The larger makes pits in the sand.

Won't as in can't. They'll breed if everything is right for them as any other Dempsey would, but two Electric Blue Dempsey will not create electric blue fry. Don't ask why, i dont know. To get the electric blue gene in fry you have to breed an EB with a normal JD. Even this creates young that are mixtures. For example you could end up with 33.333333% Electric Blue fry, 33.33333% regular fry and another 33.333333% could be somewhere inbetween. Its all very complicated.

and yes, mine dig pits constantly. I gave in scaping there tank as they do their own on a daily basis. Occasionally they'll spawn in a pit they dig. I found feeding live/frozen foods such as bloodworm/daphnia/tubifex every day for two weeks, followed by a big 40-50% water change after the two weeks helped induce them into spawning. I also let the water evaporate down about 4" over 3 weeks or so and then did a big water change - it insinuates the rainy season for them naturally :p

Goodness. that is a fact I was unaware of. Regardless, I won't seperate them. Might try and feed them bloodworm etc for an extended time tho. Been a while I gave them any. Only cleaned the tank 2 days ago so would have to use the big change system instead of evaporation as I doubt that much disappear in that tank.
Oh dear. Well off topic now.

they are named after the boxer because of their non existent facial features

That would be our Black Ghost Knife. I think we paid $20 for it at Petsmart. The price has gone down for them now though.
