I would like to know want plants would be the best to get for the beginner and that are easy to maintain i have a sand based gravel.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

My tank is a tropical tank.

From personal experience, my Moneywort (Bacopa monnieri) has absolutely taken off. Quickly and easily.

Java Fern
Java Moss
Combumba
Vallis
Certain Crypts

My suggestion is to buy a few bunches of stem plants first & see how you get on.

As im a beginner I had the same question. Are the above you mentioned all Stem plants?

As for Java Fern, how do u tie it to wood or rock? Cotton thread?

Cabomba is a great stem plant, it grows fast and when it gets too tall you can cut it to the length you want, plant both pieces and it'll keep on growing.

Java fern can be super glued to the wood or rock too, I used a piece of cotton thread on some as well. But not my favorite looking plant.

Anubias plants are really nice with broad green leaves and like the java fern, you attach them to wood or rock for the best results.

I agree with all suggestions, although bare in mind that most plants are grown emersed. Be prepared for a little melting.
But I congratulate you on the choice of live plants, they can be as rewarding as the fish. And your fish will thank you.

Do I need to put anything under the sand in order for the plants to grow such as s soil? i saw something advertised in the pkfmag but its pretty expensive people on here did suggest to put cat litter under the sand what type of litter should i get ? and would i need to wash it?

Someone else will have to comment on the litter, I have a low tech set up. Just sand, and two watts per gallon. Though started adding Flourish once a week.
My plants are shooting for the surface. You could also use root tabs in the sand.
