Right guys I am converting my juewl rio 180 into a marine setup.

I have ordered:

1x Arcadia I bar now do i need 2 actinic blue bulbs or 2 10000k white bulbs or one of each???
1x TMC V2 400 protein skimmer
1x Seio 1100 power head now I have a fluval 305 externaly filter on this tank do I need it for anything as this has a power head aswell and so does the protein skimmer doesnt it??? or will i need another power head if so what 2 would you recomend.

Can you think of any other equipment that I will be needing.

On the lights the 'traditional' approach is one of each - one white and one actinic. depends what you're planning on keeping though.

Other gear will include test kits, RO system, refractometer. Additional powerheads might be a good idea - you should look for at 20x tank turnover per hour.

You might want to add a message in your other thread by the way, that you've already made your mind up ref a skimmer as people are going to the trouble of providing further assistance in respect of a decision you've already made (like I just did - grr!) . Better yet - just add to your original thread.

If you mix your own salt you'll need the actual salt and a bucket and additional powerhead to mix it. Don't forget a heater for the tank, and a heater to mix the salt, either.

I have an old juwel internal and a 50w heater in the garage so i can deal with water changes ok. I know about the cosmetics: test kits, sande, salt etc. But i mean hardware wise will I need anything else whats a uv steraliser????

uv steriliser hooks up to your tank and runs the water through a tube containing a uv bulb, it kills off nasties and it's another way of cleaning your water.

it's not an essential but some people swear by them

i'd get more powerheads, and lots of them! I'd say 20x turnover is the minimum, plenty of people run more, once you start adding corals you tend to find you'd just like to have a bit mroe directional flow here there and everywhere so get the best from your corals. we've a tank full of powerheads now!

Right so how many powerheads and can anyone recomend a model? Also will I need to use my external at all or shll i sell it???

personally i'd get rid of the external, don't need it for a marine tank if you have enough powerheads and LR.

you said before your tanks a 55 us gallon, so 203litres, times that by 20 it's 4070, so the combined total of lph your powerheads do should be no less than 4070.

you can do that with 1 big powerhead or many small ones, completely up to you.

So if I was to get 2x 2500 lph power heads one at each end of the tank would that surfice. This marine stuff is quiet complex. lol

yes that would be fine, you may want to get more at a later date but that should be ok for now.

you need to make sure you get enough LR and position it and the powerheads so that water flow is strong through the rocks and you have no dead spots.

yeah it's all a bit tricky to get your head around, but once you've got it cracked and the tank is stable maintenance is a doddle. Our marine tank is now our lowest maintenance tank, they key is to getting it set up right in the first place.

I would do some research into sumps and refugium's too, most people say it's easier to set up your tank with one in the first place than to add one to a mature tank, so worth looking in to now. :good:

no reason why not in theory, you might need to drill the tank and/or modify the cabinet to give enough room for one.

which is precisely why it's better to decide if you want one now and look into the logistics of it. drilling the tank and riggin it up with no livestock to worry about is obviously infinitely better than doing it with fish and corals in buckets of water!

if i was you i would go for 2 SEIO M820, will give you more flow than you need but the write type of flow, coral does not like a jet of water hitting it, you will find it will grow and look better if you move the water past it , also look and the tunze nanos, and koralia hydro . seio are what i will be running in my tank ( two of the m2600). the seios are number two to the tunze rang but that is only down to power consumption. but any of the above would be far better than any power head (maxijet like). also tanks work better with more than one pump.

hope that helps a bit :)
