you should get at least another 4 silver dollers because they need to be in shoals. what type of catfish is it. a bottom feeder is some sort of catfish or loach . if you dont know you should find out what species you have just incase it is a species that will get too big for your tank or eat smaller fishes.

you should take some photos of them and post them to see what they are. i'm only saying this to see what fish are compatible with them. the silver catfish sounds like a pictus catfish. they cant be with small fish such as neons.

i actually just got 3 lil figure 8 puffers and they are getting along great with the other fish and i got 2 zebra snails for them to munch on they havent seemed interested in them yet might be too lil but the guy told me they need to eat them to keep there teeth down

that toadstool centre piece is amazing
where did you get it? was it very expensive? and do you need specific water conditions to keep it alive?

sorry to go off subject!! :good:

Figure 8 Puffers are brackish Pufferfish no? so they require a SG rating.

Silver Dollars like to be in groups and the size they grow to I think they are too big for a 30 gallon.

i have always added a lil aquarium salt to my tank 1tbsp per 10g thats what the ppl told me to do it helps all tropical fish helps build immune sys
and you think the silver dollar will get to big damn ...i was sold a pacu a while back with out knowing about its enormuse size the guy said it woulnt get much bigger then what it already was about the size of a silver dollar and 2 months later it was 8 inches i had to donate him might have to do the same with the silver dollar although i might be aquiring a nice 75g tank from my dads friend

Aquarium Salt and the salt you need are two different things, and the fish you have in there might not like the salt you need.
Its Marine salt used for marine tanks and you would need a hydrometer to measure the saltinity of your water. Brackish is basically between Freshwater and Marine, Too Salty to be Freshwater but not salty enough to be marine.

Here is the TFF Profile on them that contains lots of info http://www.fishforums.net/content/Oddballs...igure-8-Puffer/

P.S Dont hold me to the silver dollar info, It was just a thought..

Many Thanks

well they seem to be doing fine in the salt i have whats the differnce

I think aquarium salt is for health of fish like when you treating them etc, and marine salt will actually make your water have a salt content, They might be doing good now but in the long term they need brackish water.

Sorry I dont know much more about this but someone in the brackish section will.

They won't live out their natural life expectancies and will be more prone to getting diseases and stuff if you don't use the correct type of salt. You shouldn't really be keeping these fish in the same tank as your freshwater fish as it is not good to dose freshwater fish like catfish with salt in the long term as it puts a great strain on their osmotic processes and could eventually lead to kidney failure in the fish.
The silver dollars will grow too large for your tank and should not be kept singularly anyway, ideally they should be kept in at least a 50gal as they can grow up to 5inches long each and should be kept in shoals- you also need to feed them the right diet too as they are herbivorous characins;

Figure 8 puffers are semi aggressive and they may pick on the silver dollar, they may also fight between each other;

You say you got sold a pacu not knowing how big it grows, but you will continue to make yourself vulnerable to buying unsuitable fish for your tanks unless you research fish more thoroughly before you buy them- at the end of the day, pet shops don't have a duty to tell you everything you need to know about the fish you want to buy, and to be honest most pet shop staff tend to have pretty limited knowledge on the fish they sell anyway (since its not something that is really covered by their basic training in general). So really its up to you to make sure you know all you need to know about the fish you are buying and it is your duty as a responsible fishkeeper to research fish properly before you buy them :nod: .
You need to ID your catfish as there are thousands of types of bottom dwelling catfish, some only grow to an inch long while others grow to over 4ft long. It does sound like you could have a cory or a pim or a pleco though, does the catfish look anything like this;

Or this fish;

Dosing the aquarium with salt on a regular basis will be doing nothing beneficial for your fish, although salt can be used to treat certain diseases and parasites, it should not be used on healthy freshwater fish as it will put a strain on the fishes kidneys etc in the long term (and it certainly won't improve their immune systems). However now you have these puffers, you do need to do something about creating a brackish environment for them if you are to look after them properly- i would suggest setting a 20-30gallon brackish tank, fishless cycling it ( http://www.fishforums.net/content/New-to-t...shless-Cycling/ ) and moving the puffers into :good: .

Sounds like you have a Silver Dollar, a pimelodus pictus and a Gibbiceps , All of which will outgrow your tank

As for the puffers, IMO they are one of very few that can actually live in freshwater, however your tank isn't big enough for 3 and sooner or later you are going to notice some aggression between them.
