What Do I Do?!?! First Sand Tank!

my new tank has sand substrate and is super cloudy. how long before it isnt?

It usually will take a day or so for it to mellow out if you don't have anything stirring the water up. It will settle a lot quicker if you don't have any thing running. If you want to cycle it at the same time though it will take a little longer.

mine took 2-3 days to fully clear with a filter running and fish

completely agree, set up all my tanks with sand and never had this problem. just clean sand in bucket with hose till the water goes clear after a few seconds.

+2 - i've never had a problem with cloudy tanks when putting sand in.

Give the tank a few waterchanges it'll soon clear,but when refilling put a plate on top on the sand and aim the water over the plate to stop it kicking the sand up

I washed my sand for hours and the tank still clouded up for a day. Maybe it depends on the sand. Mine was play sand that was very very dirty. Hard to believe that parents stick their kids in this sand. I bought actual aquarium sand and it was much cleaner. Note to parents!

I used cheap play sand (argos £3) and washed it and never had this problem.

yeah, mine was some home depot play sand and the tank is much better now, to be honest i dont think i cleaned the sand enough, but everything is going well now and i am having no problems at all!
