What's new

What are you cooking?

We had BLTs yesterday. Not as tasty as usual for me. Off brand wheat bread was kind of sweet & thin slices over toasted. Tomatoes could have been more ripe. At least the bacon was yummy, I had the leftover piece for breakfast.

Tonight I'm making baked beans for dinner & the freezer. Corn on the cob ($0.08/per) & hot dogs, no bun for me.

Fishmanic, don't you have a convection oven or skillet to reheat steak? Microwaved beef is often lesser, I do it only if there's not much leftover.

I do like you do with big pkgs of sale chicken breasts. But I also marinade some in Italian dressing +/or schwarma oil & spices, & cut up some into bits for casseroles or stir fry. A bit of extra prep but faster dinners later. I use scissors for removing the icky connective stuff & most fat. I sort pieces by thickness when I'm organized; sometimes I just throw a breast into a bag & call it good enough.

I do have a convection oven but don't have a cast iron skillet for steak..I just have Teflon coated aluminum pans and pots.

Yeah, I still use "Teflon" or whatever nonstick frying pans. I never heat them on above 3 or so on a scale of stove burner 1-10. I'm not too worried about PFCs or what have you chemicals.

I'm getting old & will die of something else long before Teflon gets me. I tried cast iron & really, it's neither as non-stick or low care wonderful as we've been told ;) Let us eat steak!!

I don't think you can safely heat a teflon pan hot enough to sear a steak properly. Doesn't matter to me as I will always grill steaks on an outdoor gas grill. My gas grill is a Charbroil model made in 1998 with a thick and heavy cast aluminum lid which holds in heat better than the thin metal they use on most present day grills. Over the years, I have changed the burner, the lava rocks, the gas hose, the regulator and the flavorizer bar. I have also replaced the original burner with a wooden tray and also replaced the other tray with a handmade wooden tray. I repaired very rusty legs with wooden legs; otherwise, with rusted legs, the grill would be unusable. I will keep repairing/updating this grill till I am no longer able to use the grill. It's so much better than most of the new poorly constructed grills.

I didn't mean a Teflon pan for cooking steak, just for more gentle reheating ;) I do have stainless steel pots I use for many things & an aluminum pressure cooker or 2. But steak needs grilling! My cheap gas grill has rusted out the bottom. I'll try an old cookie sheet to catch drips but it's time for a new 1 soon.

We're having corn on the cob & a deluxe salad for a late dinner, cherries & blueberries for dessert.

b'fast this fine Sunday morning. 3-egg boursin cheese omelet, Korean SPAM, bacon and cheese tater tots, ketchup with Frank's hot sauce on the side.

Tater tots don't get enough credit as a breakfast tater. Really they are pretty much hash browns in a nugget. They are great for a breakfast burrito.

Not exactly sure why but I have a tater baking in my oven and will have a bone-in rib eye tonight. No special occasion other than the first half of the MLB season being officially over with my team in good shape. LOL! Last time I did this was 7/4 so it isn't a new thing. This will be a bit different as it will be just the steak with some rub. As to the tater I would normally have shrooms and onion sauteed to drown the tater but, tonight, it will be just butter, sour cream and some spices.

Doing a rare rice dish tonight. I don't do rice often due to the normal Arsenic content.

Anyway having chicken and rice. The rice will have chicken spices such as rubbed sage. When doing the rice a part of the water will be a spicy tomato soup. Add the partially cooked but seared chicken chunks toward the end of the rice cooking with either broccoli or peas. Will top with a healthy glob of sour cream. Since I'll add some spice for heat it should be a sort of faux Spanish Rice. Thought about adding some refried beans but decided against to keep it liter.

My Filipino friend has invited me over to have a pig's head. As the guest of honor I get the eyeballs. Smart aleck knows darn well I won't eat that but every time they get a pig it's the same thing.
I told him I've got necrotizing fasciitis and will instead be eating a beautiful rainbow trout I caught Sunday. 👍

Eww! I'm a hard pass.

We're having 100F in the shade. Husband brought home cheese steaks Mon, we had leftover 1/2s last night. So we need a healthier dinner today. I'm making what we call fried rice, various veggies sauteed & brown rice with low salt soy sauce & black pepper, no egg. Onion & bell pepper are the only mandatory veggies. I chopped napa cabbage, broccoli, carrot & may add frozen peas. I'll also sauté chicken breast in olive oil & a sprinkle of seasoned salt. I don't always like meat in my fried rice but cooked separately I have options.

@jaylach I rinsed my brown rice before cooking today. According to what I read recently that can remove ~40% of the arsenic (present in all rice but more in any brown types more than any white). I think I worry more about microplastics killing me but they're everywhere! Carrots!! are among the worst veggies. Peeling them removes a lot as does filtering tap water, but neither will keep us much safer. Meh, we're all going to die of something...there are limits to what I'm willing to do to be a bit safer.

Thinking about getting a waffle cooker. Anyone have a brand/model they would recommend? This is one I'm considering.

One thing I want to try I saw on the Food Network and it isn't even a waffle.. How about a chicken or turkey sandwich with the bun being stuffing done in a waffle cooker as the bun. Add a little cranberry and I'd bet dollars to donuts it would be good

I love this one (have had it for years) but they are just so tiny (It is a dash): https://www.amazon.com/DASH-Multimaker-Mini-System-Removable/dp/B0D1VSYPTP/?tag=fishforums-20
Not pricey either. Worked good for me.

Another option: https://www.amazon.com/Flip-n-Store...re-Indicator/dp/B0CYHZFMFX/?tag=fishforums-20

I have a Bella toaster, works like a charm. Love it. Heard good things about Bella waffle irons.

And the one you are looking at there as well is pretty solid I believe.

(Just a note, my breakfest every day is a chaffle with home made blueberry syrup and butter, with a side of scrambled eggs and either turkey bacon or deer sausage. So, I have prolly used over 5 different waffle makers, and have made a ton of waffles and chaffles. I even have a waffle T shirt )

Thanks! :)

One thing I like about the ones you linked is the griddle plates. Could possibly be used as a panini. press.

Tonight will be a stuffed chicken breast. Done like Cordon Blue but stuffed with broccoli and white cheese instead of ham and Swiss. The chicken will be sauteed in brown butter with tater wedges. Will probably add some broccoli or frozen peas to finish at the end as I like firm veggies.
