Dear fish fanatics
I am a novice who is interested in getting a tropical aquarium up and running. The “Fluval Roma 240 Aquarium” as caught my eye – would anyone recommend this and the equipment supplied with it? Would I be better off purchasing the ‘bits’ separately?

Comes with:
Fluval 305 external filter
2 x 42" 40 watt GLO fluorescent lighting
300 watt Fluval Tronic heater
Nutrafin Care Pack (LCD thermometer,100ml Nutrafin Aqua Plus & Cycle. 26g Nutrafin Tropical Flake food).

What else would I need e.g. water testing kit?

Many Thanks

I bought the 125 which came with a internal filter the only downside which i have now replaced with a eheim 2215. These tanks are great, look fantastic and plenty of room in the stand if your getting that aswell. Only thing i would say is shop around online and in plenty of stores i was getting prices for a 125 from 200-300 on the internet but found a store nearby selling them for 189! For the filter i would just search for reviews on google, then you can get a wide range of opinions.

Only thing you would need with the 240 is gravel or sand (which some website throw in for free), i dont think a net comes with it, mini master test kit would be more than enough depending on the fish you intend to keep and a background for the tank (makes a big difference).

As for decoration its entirely up to you, research any fish your interested in first though as some prefer different types of substrate and decor. Just keeps your fish happier :good: Give everything a good clean even boil slate, rocks or driftwood to get rid of anything harmful or that can cause problems.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gaz

Many thanks for your reply. I noticed too that the prices range quite considerable with some up to +£100 more than others.

I thought these tanks look great too and am sure it would add something to the room. I’m pleased you are happy with yours.

Thanks for your suggestions on the extras, how much gravel do you think would be necessary for a 240 tank? Say 2-3cm deep?

Did you replace the internal filter that you had come with it with an external?

Think I’m looking forward to customising the tank the most, seems quite good décor that can be bought – I will take your advice on what the fish may prefer too.

Thanks again.

Ive always put lots in as my dad has always told me and done. I think it was mainly for undergravel filters and plants i wouldnt be too sure on what a good measurement but ive always put around to inch at the front 4-5inch at the back obviously gradually increasing from 2 to 4-5. not sure why maybe someone else can help you out with that.

Yeah i did it adds more room to your aquarium and when cleaning no crap will all be outside the tank instead of falling off the internal.

Hi

I have seen the Fluvals set up and they look reallly nice... It was my preferred option too but i got my tank second hand which was a Juwel Rio 180, they also do a 240, im very pleased wqith mine so far, although im looking to replace the internal filter in time

I have sand substrate and only have around 1 inch at front to 1.5 inch at the back, if your using gravel you could put more, but im not sure that you need anymore than is neccessary, 5 inches seems alot to me
