Got a couple pieces of spiderwood soaking in a bucket for the past several days (change out the water daily) and have noticed they're starting to give off this strange smell, almost like peas or green beans. I've soaked mopani wood before and it never gave off that kind of smell, so is that just how spider wood is or is there something off?

Well it is a Rhododendron root, so that does seem right. I haven't used spiderwood in a few years so I don't remember a specific smell. Mopani doesn't have a smell other then earthy/woody tea like. Other woods like some bog woods smell like rot sometimes, I will pull them out at that point and toss them. I think you are OK with the pea/green bean smell.

It’s normal for soaking driftwood to start smelling after a while.
