Star4 and myself went on a trip around some local fish stores (local to me not her) today. We had decided we werent buying anything, just a day out for something to do. Had already been to a couple of places when I decided lets go to Mere Park MA.

Immediatley headed to cichlid section, where there were soooo many gorgeous fish, Vieja Argentea, Synspila, chocolates, geophagus and then we noticed a tank with some Aequidens Metae in  The OOoooooohs and Aaarrgggh followed for about 10 minutes before we both said, no no, not buying, so carried on around the shop. 5 minutes later, headed back to the Metae and proceeded to talk outselves in and out of buying them for about 45 minutes  I then went, right Im gonna get two, then said, no I cant leave the other two, so will get all of them. Then changed my mind again and said no, just two. Got the guy to bag up the two I wanted, looked at star4 who then jumped on a stool to get a better look at the remaining two and after much deliberation (all of 2 seconds) said, Ok, I will take the other two  The guy thought we were completely nuts and he wasnt wrong.

So here are my two, still a little stressed after coming face to face with two massive Daemons, but they should settle quickly enough once they realise the Daemons maybe large but very harmless.

Gorgeous fish, not sure why it took you 45 minutes to decide to be honest

btw, been away for 4 days and come back to see atleast 3 of my rotties have had a major growth spirt, well chuffed :)

Very nice! Are you building up a community again or are these fish to move with you?

Also been meaning to ask you do you know any good Satanoperca ID guides, one of my shops has some in labeled as Geophagus Juripari  and I know there is more than one species in the tank and I think a few are lillith the one spot satanopercas and not sure of the others but its just really annoying me that they are mis labeled and Ive never worked out the differences apart from the spots down the sides?

Not really building a community (but yes these are coming with me when I move), as you may remember, I was looking for something to act as a 'dither' but nothing really hit the spot, these guys happen to have the same requirements water quality/temperature wise, dont get too big and are just the ticket. So it will only be them and the Daemons.

I dont really know any good id guides on the Satanoperca species, this: http://www.cichlidae.com/gallery/species.php?s=335 is about the best one. The only ones Ive kept previously and now are the Daemons, the Lilith are indeed similar to the Daemons, but with the one spot (as opposed to three) and the spot on the tail fin I think  and require the same water params and temps. Sorry not much use to there.

I got confused on this one Wills, most of the time the Jurupari is labled as a geophagus but it is a Satanoperca, the jurupari has one tail spot whereas the daemon has 3 spots and is absolutely increadible to look at, seen Minxy's in the flesh today and I couldnt take my eyes off them. The best pics I have seen is on that link I put on one of your threads, which unfortunately wouldnt allow me to put into favorites

Lol. Still makes me laugh every time I see the response of some smaller fish the first time they are put in a tank with some large (but gentle) giants. I always imagine the thoughts that must go through their heads at the sight of such monsters !!

I'm with you on that one hamfist haha. I always have a tense few minutes where i'm panicking about the potential mayhem i've just caused, and whether or not the new additions will make it through the first night. No matter how long you have your gentle giants and know their personality (or so we think) they could ultimately surprise us still. Thankfully i've been ok so far. The poor new smaller tank mates must be 'bricking' it so to say when first added. Although two Daemons would be something else haha.

Loving the new additions. They are so cute, i've never seen them before. Pictures as they grow are obligatory ofcourse! :p

Well last night I had a massive panic, I couldnt find the Metae anywhere!! In fact I gave up and went to bed, knowing they must have found somewhere #41#### good to hide. Because as large (nearly 10") the Daemons are, they could no way have eaten them, they have small mouths and the Metae are around 2.5".

This morning, after extensive searching, I found them both sitting on the fluval 4 hiding under a plant that covers it *phew* terrified poor things. So Ive done a quick rescape of some plants and wood to try to give them some confidence to come out a bit, they have ventured out, but do panic when the Daemons come around, in no way are they in danger, the Daemons are just doing their normal thing of searching for food and moving sand into piles, but I understand why they would be scared of them, lets face it, something 10x our size comes around stomping through our house, I think we would 'brick it' too

I hope they settle down and get used to them, because they are such lovely things and I dont want them to live a life of fear :(

I've seen a similar experience from my Filament Glassfish in the last couple of days, after bringing the ~3.5cm SL Leopard Bushfish insde temporarily. As much as Ctenopoma acutirostre are predatory they will only show this side of their character to anything that will fit in the mouth whole and I plan to move them back to the 540l way before such times. I think the filamentosa were glad to see the poor Pearls return to their tank last night, after another disasterous attempt at giving the Pearls more room to swim (I think I've lost four of the nine after two nights in the 540l, although I've yet to move ever bit of bogwood to be sure).

The sooner I can partition off some of the Rio240 for fish other than my Lionhead Cichlid family (now 13 fry after seeing one sadly die in front of my eyes), the better!

Had to search really hard for my 2 aswell, the bigger one is getting more confident but the little one has found a hole under the bogwood and wont come out
