just a quick one

how many times shpuld your tank water go through a external filter if you fully stock it ?
just so i can work out for a new external for my 175 lts tank

cheers
eric :good:

ps have been on here for days going through the treads on externals, got my head done in lol :hyper:

ideally a turnover of x8 of the capacity of water is teh best way to go in my 200litre i have a fluval 205 and a fluval 4 they come to around 1600LPH so thats a turnover of 8 so anything between 6-8 is fine

On thing to keep in mind is that you can never have too much filtration. It could be that you end up with too much flow for the fish you keep but even if your filter turns the water 20 times an hour, the only down side is that you really paid more than you needed to for your filter.

As far as a mimimum is concerned, I tend to lean toward 5 times an hour. That also depends on the fish you want to stock. For community fish like tetras and the like and normal stocking, then 5x is plenty. If however, you are looking at messy fish like plecos, goldfish, oscars, etc. then you need more simply because there is more waste to process. Same applies if you plan to overstock the tank.

ive only got 2 community tanks
the one i want to put the external on is a aqua one ufo corner tank it got 10 zebra danios,7 neons,6 corys,3 barbs,6 shrimp and a bn cat fish/
the only reason i want a external is because i dont like the power head that is stuck in the middle of the tank :hyper:
ps its 175 lts
cheers

i have a fluval 305 on my 150litre ish 4' tank and it does 1000lph so props around 700-800lph in practice. decent filter, maybe if you wanted you could go for the 405 which is 300lph more .

I also put a fluval 2+ internal on it at the other end to keep a decent water circulation .(360lph out of that )

so if i put a fluval 305 on at aprox=800lts thats 5x turn over
just say that it has 6ins of filter media in it ,thats x amount of bacteria which filters you tank(you with me so far  )
if you could double the amount of filter media ,that would double the amount of bacteria ,right
so would this be the same as having 10x turn over

cheers
