I've had my 180 gallon tank for awhile and to save time, i've been doing my water changes with tap water from a hose and adding the recommended amount of tap water treatment to the tank after its full. is this okay? if not, are there any tricks to performing 40 gallon water changes every week?

That should be fine. I've read many people who do that, and some who add the conditioner before the water to be safe. If you were killing your bacteria, your water tests would show that very quickly.
