I am probably being completely stupid but when people talk about the water colum what exactly are they refering to?

 I assumed it would mean a specific part of the water as in so many inches from the substrate etc.
so when people say dose the water colum they could just say dose the water

People talk about plants that feed from the water column meaning they gather nutrients from around the plant instead of from the roots. It is not well defined how much of the water is referred to because who knows how much water actually comes in contact with the plant for nutrient absorption. As Truckasauras said, it is a generic term referring to the water between the substrate and the surface but not including the water that is in the substrate.
