You should too remember that it's important to change water regularity and enough, bacause it is the only way to reduce NO3- from aquarium and it reduces bacteria level in water.

Of course plants can use NO3-, but usually NO3- is too much. Correct nitrate level is 2-10 mg/l (ppm).

One of my tank is heavy planted too like Great Lakes, and only few fish - not overstock at all - and nitrate-level doesnt become too high even in 2 weeks, but i still change water, because it good for fish and good for plants.

Plants too like hygrophila polysperma or nomanphila stricta appreciate fresh water. Usually the plants are forgotten although many ways they are even demanding than fish are :)
