Water Change With Sand

Hi all I have sand in my tank and I've just done a 20% water change! Am I right in saying i do this with the suction thingy from the bottom to take up all the crap with it. But the suction device I've got was takin the sand with it.? Is there a different way I should b doing this

Take your siphon hose (suction thingy) and keep it above the sand an inch or so, then swirl it around to make a little whirlpool. Whatever is on the surface of the sand can then be sucked up into the hose without disturbing the sand, which is heavier than the waste that sits on top.
