I have been looking into getting a water test kit but dont want the strips does any1 have a brand they would recomend. Is the api kit any good. And id rather not have to pay a fortune on it.
Any advice greatly appriciated

Api master kit should be around 20 bucks on Amazon. Maybe you can find it cheaper, but that's a decent price.

Unless you are adjusting water parameters (GH, KH ph) you won't need a test for GH/KH. Once you know the source water GH and KH, and assuming you do not target it directly in the tank, it will be much the same. The pH is different, but that is included in the Master Combo.

The API tests are very reliable and not as expensive as some other equally good tests.
 
Re GH and KH, just take some tap water to a fish shop and ask them to test it. Even if they charge it will be cheaper than buying the testers.
