WARNING: Penalty to your life force

For every fish you kill or let needlessly die you suffer one point from your life force. While no one knows exactly how many life force points a person has if you kill too many fishes you will suddenly exhaust your life force and drop dead.

While most people only have a few life force points - thank god i have billions for I am an awful fish keeper.

Aquaristic icon Rosario LaCorte, who has been referenced in another recent thread, made it to 95. Ichthyological icon Stan Weitzman to 90, while his wife and fellow avid aquarist, Marilyn, (as in Nannostomus marilynae) journeyed on to 96. And a fella named Innes was 95 years young at his passing.

All I would say were better aquarists than I could dream of being.

But I think @anewbie has it wrong. Aquarium keeping, if you put your mind to it, is something you can keep your brain working with. You can keep learning, and you can stay engaged with something you love even as you may have to reduce the number of tanks or the work you do. You meet (maybe here) other aquarists with engaging ideas, and engagement in the world is one of the things I value in life. I think it keeps us alive and thinking longer.

And I think our fish, realizing they can't digest mammalian fats (so eating us is unhealthy) decide to lend us a hand. Well, a fin.. Or something like that.

I bet if you kept a school of 2 feet black pacu (not full grown); or Goliath Tigerfish they would happily eat a limb or two at breakfest if they had the opportunity. Of course you will need that dream 200 foot aquarium for either

And of course we all have seen what happens when the bad guy crosses a river of piranha on tv

[for the record it is unlikely for the black pacu or piranha to harm a person though that over grown whale of a tetra the tigerfish is one you probably do not want to tempt]

It's not that they wouldn't take a bite, but they can't digest us effectively. You are in your fishes' antacid ads.

I had an arapaima size up my head for lunch, and it clearly decided it was a go. I moved fast. It clearly hadn't been online reading diet tips.

I’m sure long life of aquarists, has more to do with the tranquil, peaceful, feeling I experience watching my tanks, than the lack of fish I’ve killed… however watching the repeated smashing into the glass, or repeated death rolls of a dying fish may counter the day’s peaceful feelings

Probably doesn't matter to me. Besides much aquarium ignorance in my youth, I've been responsible for the demise of many, many trout. So I'm doomed. And when I think about how trout taste? Totally worth it.

My Dad loved trout - when i was a kid we would go fishing in the river - he would take the ones he caught home to eat and i would throw the ones i caught back in the river. The fact that his were 4 times larger than mine probably wasn't relevant here
