Want To Change To Sand

i realy like the look of a sand tank. i just want to know what sand is best to put in my tropical tank.

I use 'silver sand, bought from an aquatic store, needs cleaning first though.

I also have a question regarding sand - can it be placed atop gravel, or should all gravel be removed first?

Remove the gravel first otherwise over time the sand will sink through the gravel.

There are many types of sand that may be used. Many marine sand, such as argonite sand and crushed coral, will raise the pH over time. You can use playsand or pool filter sand. Silica sad is also used. Play sand will be the cheapest, but you have you rinse it like CRAZY. For my tank, I am using reef sand, not sure if it will raise the pH, it was just the cheapest sand I could find, So I decided to buy it. If it does raise the pH, I don't mind, as I am setting up a tank for multies.
