Using Woods

okay So I have Wood in my back garden that is Very dead,
how is the best way to go about preparing it.
I dont fancy hunting and spending a fortune on any.

I would have through wood thats totally dead where its got no bark and all white etc.. has no sap left etc...

any advice would be nice as I have looked for Ages (few days on and off) for information..

well if you must.

put in an oven, below 150f, till it has totally dried out. then i would suggest you soak it in told tank water, for a week. then transfer it and pour boiling water over it. put it back in the oven, till its dry again. place it back in some old tank water, leave it for several days. then do some water tests, you will need to establish a base reading for the water before you put the wood in.

if its too big to put in the oven of to soak in some water, i would say forget it. its just not worth the risk to your fish. the question is is it worth it at all? only you can say.

Definitely not worth the risk. Youre much better getting hold of some wood from your LFS. Its aquarium safe and if you go for something like mopani wood, won't leack too many tannins. I've got all mine from Pets at Home. Wouldn't buy fish from them in a million years but their wood is always a good price and they normally have a reasonably good selection. Or try ebay. Normally more expensive but if you're after something big often a good place to start.

I have found some amazing piece's of wood on Redcar beach that I think look far better than any bogwood I've seen. I use it for my lizards vivariums. It would look brilliant in an aquarium. But, I'm not prepared to take the risk.

don't use wood from a saltwater beach. it will have saltwater in it and that can harm scaleless fish. and it will mess with your ph horribly.

yea you said that you found good wood that you use for your lizards... so why post that??? if he didnt know that he couldnt use them for aquariums then their could have been big problems..
i do realize that you said you would not take the risk but you didnt say what the risk was.

it's a shame as many of the peces are expensive at first sight some pieces i bought look great but when put in i find i dont like them, enfield in england has great pieces the sort that are twiggy etc... but so damn expensive

yea you said that you found good wood that you use for your lizards... so why post that??? if he didnt know that he couldnt use them for aquariums then their could have been big problems..i do realize that you said you would not take the risk but you didnt say what the risk was.

Let me break it down for you.

Basically saying, "Yea, I know what you mean, mate. I found some I'd like to have used, too".

I use it for my lizards vivariums. It would look brilliant in an aquarium. But, I'm not prepared to take the risk.

Again, basically, "Dispite the risks of ruining my water quality, I used it else-where".

I would suggest reading posts properly in future, AFishDude. And don't jump to assumptions on what people 'think'.

c'mon guys. this could be a very informative thread. lets not let it degenerate, into a farce.


i have never understood why sea drift wood is no good for the FW aquarium. if mangrove wood is safe why not sea drift wood? as mangrove is a high end brackish environment. guess it may be something to do with the mangrove wood being alive, when it is collected.
