Upgrading Tank Questions.

Hi Everyone!

I have a 60 litre tank(cycled) and I am upgrading it to a Fluval 125L and i'm looking for some advice?

Now I only plan on running the 125L tank so I am looking to relocate all the fish into the tank.
I have 1 Retail Shark, 1 Peppered Cory (both the shark and cory I have just adopted from a friend hence why i'm getting a bigger tank) 3 Guppies and 6 Neon Tetras.

Once I set the new tank up if I use all of the old filter medium and gravel can I effectively just relocate everyone in? The reason for this is that I need to move the old tank to put the new one in its place (i've got no room to keep them both running really). I will need reduce the weight in the tank so I can move it so would it be best to bag the fish, take the water out of the old tank, move it then fill the new one up then should I place them in their new home?

Also i know this is a stupid question but where would be a good place to get good enough bags (UK)?

If you have any alternative plan or advice it would be great cos i've only ever had my 60L tank and i'm worried that i'm going to harm my fish as the tank won't have much time to run and be ready for them.

I'm sorry if I sound pretty clueless (I am lol) but I want to put as little risk to the fish as possible!

If you have an unused bucket, just move enough water to the bucket for the fish to be happy living there while you swap tanks. I use 5 gallon buckets for my water changes so 2 of those would be plenty of water to hold all of your fish long enough to change the tanks around and set back up. Once the new tank is set up and the fish in the buckets go into the new tank, fill the tank the rest of the way using dechlorinated water. You could think of it as a large water change using a new container. The filter that has been taking care of your fish will take care of their biological filter needs until the new larger filter can start to take over after a few weeks. Just run both filters until the new one is ready.

Totally agree with the above. The only thing I'd add is, don't try and move a tank with anything in it. people do and they get away with it, but there's always that one time when disaster hits. It's just not worth it.

Hi everyone,

Quick question, I'm in the process of moving everything into the new tank and I've filled it up. i've got the U3 Filter that came with the tank all fired up and working and i'm about to put my old Fluval 2+ in the tank but i'm not sure where to position it? I've got the U3 Running on the spray bar on one side, should I put the old filter on the opposite side or should I place them on the same side?

I would say place the filter on the opposite side,i had 2 filters running one at each end of the tank.

Thanks, I put it on the other side at and i've added a spray bar onto the fluval 2+ (had one lying around) and it seems fine with abit of a current but nothing that seems to bother the fish.

I was wondering if its worth while keeping both filters in permanently or am I best removing one of them in a couple of months?
