I didn't get to clean the juvie growout tanks in the storage room of our garage tonight. Why, you ask? Because my mother's neurotic chihuahua saw an opossum and decided to chase it into the garage rather than away from the house, and it found a lovely hiding place right next to the storage room door, where it stayed put hissing at me every time I tried to walk past. I left it alone in there with the dogs in the house for over an hour and it was still in the same place when I went to check if it had left. Let me just say, opossums are hideous, mean little buggers.

My parents have an oppossum problem in Houston... they come into our back yard and eat whatever food is left in our cat's feeding dish. My dad has actually trapped several and released them into fields miles from the house, but they still keep coming.... I'm assuming that they're not the same ones coming back over and over.

it had to do with bettas because she couldnt do waterchanges in her grow out tanks....haha and yes i agree they are quite ugly...

 even though they hiss like a Crocodile when you come near them..they won't attack you though, they're too scared. They will stand there or walk stiff leggedly away if you get too close.

Best thing to do is get a broom and push them to where ever you woudl like them to "stand" and leave them there lol. We get them all the time in our garage...they get trapped in there and don't know what to do.

They won't "attack" you, as I said...but that doesn't mean try to reach down and pet or pick it up..at that point they would promptly bite you..and they do carry rabies. So no touching..just pushing lol.

I think they are cute too...with that prehensile tail and all and that adorable pouch. If you ever saw a live, in person, baby one..you'd be hooked. They are tooo freakin sweet, like a kitten... only their tail is hairless .

TRY to tell me THAT isn't adorable lol. You know you can't

that is the cutest pic I have ever seen of a opossum. My mom used to keep them as pets when she was a kid, i always thought she was nuts but if I ever ran across one that looked like that  I would have a lot of trouble not bringing it home with me.

hmmm trying to figure out a way of convinsing some prego opossom to follow me home :D

I kept thinking I was wrong on that....so I doubled checked that and I was mistaken ..sorry.

I was thinking of a racoon..possum's are actually the ones that get it the least in the wild, because of their lowere body temp.

OMG...

possum raise their young in a pouch (female) and can have up to 13 (avg 3-8 in my home). for this reason females hit by cars, etc can have living babies in her pouch. my house is full of survivors. please take the time to find help; they are worth it. any baby found alone under 7-10" w/o tail is too young to take care of itself.

Oh my...I can see me checking many dead carcasses along my road now...after reading this  .

i don't have a opposum problem i have a raccon problem in my backyard. Oh and the broom thing to push racoons away will not work. we tryed to push one away with a stick as thick as my thumb and it like karate chopped it in half. Then we ran waay. It eventaully went away. But when i used to live in appartments traps were placed to try to catch cats aqnd opposums were the only thing trapped. I had to dayly have to let them loss. And had to wait till it ran off which took forever cause they try to play dead.

lol I can just see the racoon pulverising the stick. They are so fiscous when they feel cornered. Racoons have such cute little baby hands tho. Have you seen one eat? They pick up little pieces of food then wash it off in water before taking bites. SOOOOO fricking cute.

you guys are lucky you have small animal problems! i live out in the country and we get coyotes that come down from the fields and look to see if my dogs have left any food, but they don't come too close to the house.

and also sometimes, very rarely, we will see a couple wolves. they come a little close to the house, but it's scary going to the car and seeing eyes looking at you. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!

and yes, baby possums are adorable!!! i think baby any animal is cute :D

We have actually been having a lot cougars in the area lately. :( one of my neighbors cows was attacked by one. The poor cow had huge claw marks on its back and some puncture wounds from its teeth on its neck. When he checked out the rest of his cows he found several had wounds on their legs. They called out a wildlife guy and he said the herd probably protected the one being attacked, which would be how they got their wounds. They are trying to get a law passed allowing hunting with dogs to get the population under control. :(

I didn't say push a racoon out with a broom. Racoons can be VERY dangerous. You should never approach one, not ever. The full grown ones can really do some damage if you piss them off.

My neighbor coon hunts (for whatever reason..not like you can eat them..so I find it dumb, but anyways) and has had several of his dogs killed, and numerous hurt badly, by coons they've cornered up.
