Forgive this question but is unclear water a sign I should clean my filter? I have recently changed from an internal to external so please also tell me do I just rinse the other media and squeeze out the sponges as I did before or is there a better way to do it? I plan to just pop it in some dechlorinated water? (Not tank water as I cleaned the tank yesterday!!)

Nah.

When using a new external it take a while to "clog up". If most of the media is brand new, and i presume a sponge/ceramic/possibly carbon, mix, its quite "freeflowing" and wont pick up the finer bits. It will in time, but still potentially not al of it.

This is where Filter Floss becomes your best friend :)

I presume you;ve stuffed the media from your old internal into the external?

dont rinse the filter media in anything but tank water or you will get rid off all the good microorganisms. you can just buy some filter wool and put that in the filter, it will get rid of any fine particles and makes the water much clearer

I ran the two of them together for a couple of weeks and then popped the sponge into the ex from the in. Oh I don't think I have seen filter floss!! So in what one of the massive layers so I pop it into? I am guessing none of the liquids I have quickly accumulated will help  I don't think it bothers the fishies though?!

What filter do you have? Most eternals come with floss as standard i think.

You should know what I have, you convinced me to buy it  I think it did actually I have bought more off ebay for the same filter, so why is it unclear?

You have a EX1200 then?! lol

Ive not had one, so dont know if it comes with any, but if it does, its probably a small amount (if Fluval's stingy efforts in "included media" are anything to go by!)

It goes in the last media basket the water goes through, so probably the top. Minnnt will be able to confirm. :)

LOL! I have convinced so many members on TFF to buy them i have lost track of who has them and who is yet to buy one... :hey:

It should be the final layer of media in your filter. Easy enough to remove 10 litres of tank water for you to rinse the media through. In all honesty though, if it is just the floss that needs cleaning then i sometimes just do it under the tap. lol. Won't hurt anything too much anyway, especially if squeezed as dry as you can get it.

If you're worried about the water then get some more floss (the stuff on a roll is far better value than TT floss) and some Purigen will work wonders.

Haha!! I was very quick to be convinced, buy and set up... I didn't wait around and I do love it. So would it be okay to just rinse in water? If I clean it will clear it up a bit?! I could remove a little more tank water just more worried over stress to the fish but I could put in stress coat?!

It won't stress the fish mate if you're doing it right.

Just give it some running tap ;) It's designed to be replaced so it won't affect your main colony.
