So, here's Imhotep in case you missed his intro thread:

Q1.

Is he a quad-ray CT as others have suggested? (I can't for the life of me count the rays properly)

Q2.

What breeding cross would produce the best results?

These are the candidates:

Ta muchly :D

yes he is and I would use fifi or trixi, but its kinda hard to tell because all the pics of the girls are small.

trixi's ray extensions are a little bit longer, but fifi is a better match color wise. if you were going to breed I would condition them both, just in case your male or the first female really hate each other. as sometimes two particular bettas just cant stand each other.

What are you trying to achieve by breeding him? I mean are you trying to improve his colours, perhaps by getting rid of that red wash (I like it but it might be considered a fault) or get fry with similar quality finnage or what? That will make it easier to choose between your females. Fifi may well throw quad fry by the looks of her tail.

This is how you can tell he's a quad ray. I've traced in yellow three of the rays that leave his body. You'll see by the end of the tail each has split into four rays - hence 'quad'. One of them has split into three rays (it split once, then one of the resulting rays subsequently split again). This usually means he's been injured and lost the ray, or is young and hasn't grown them fully yet. How big is he?

i would say that he isnt a true quad but holds the gene quite well, i would expect to see a lot more of the rays being quad to refer him as quad, but he has a good potential, fifi is the best choice tbh, a great line to her and nice solid strong looking extensions, i would put money on her having pk in her genes as well as her extension are rather short even though strong and quite thick set, if that makes any sense. I would breed him if he was mine, if my jinx with spawning crowntail males wasnt so strong  that is

Ah! Thanks for that.

Imhotep is about 1.5" in the body so I am guessing he is under a year old.

I would like to try and get CTs out of him, whether with the red irridescence or without. I quite like his colouring.

Fifi, I think is a spade cross, I would have to ask Larissa to be sure as I cannot remember what she said.

I think the other girls may be a bit jealous come new year then ;)

Cheers guys :good:

Hi!

I wouldn't be suprised if there is some Plakat along the lines as has been mentioned, mum is big for a betta she has grown since I got her and I thought she was fully grown!

Oh!!!! its nice to see that people are spawning our previously sold bettas, yes mum has PK definately in her

Ha, that must mean the (non CT) females around here are pure plakat, their anal fin is about half the length of that spadetail's IF THAT. I don't even bother buying them because I don't want to end up with a bunch of young PK males... no matter how many times you tell some people they are MALE they insist on trying to spawn them with veiltail males. The Melafix company is rich enough.... lol

I thought that was a quad ray? It seems to me like the vast majority of the rays split into three (young?) or four. Does it have to be ALL of them for it to qualify as QR?

I think it has to be most of the rays that split into 4 to be called a quad, however if even just one or two split into 4 then he still carrys the gene.
