Treating Ich

Looks like one of my guppies has ich. There's no signs of it on any of the other fish so do I need to treat the whole tank or remove the guppy into the spare tank and just treat him?
 
Ich is a parasite and present in the water and gravel of your tank, not just on the guppy. The white spots you see are the casings they are in while attached to the fish.

Reading this article http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/ichthyophthirius will explain pretty much everything you ever need to know about ich. If you want to treat it successfully you'll need to be aware of its life cycle, etc, else you'll end up in a vicious circle.
 
I'd recommend the heat and salt treatment, completely eradicated it. By the looks of things on here, it works quicker than most meds do.
 
A good ich treatment is better than relying on salt and heat. Not all fish can tolerate salt, in fact it's dangerous for some, and increasing temperatures too much can stress them out too if they prefer the cooler side of things.

The salt works by dehydrating the fishes skin, in turn sort of drawing the parasite out. The heat simply speeds up the life cycle of the parasite. Meds actually kill the parasite while it's in its free swimming form, before it finds a host fish. Meds and raising the temp a couple of degrees is the best treatment.

I think it is literally impossible to dehydrate a fish's skin since they live in water. Also, the ich parasite is not vulnerable when it is on the fish's skin. It is only vulnerable when it is in the free-swimming stage. I'd suggest you review the info in the link you provided, the Skeptical Aquarist's site.

Salt works because it stresses all the organism in the tank. It stresses the fish, the plants, and the microorganisms. What you hope to do is achieve a level of stress that kills the microorganisms like the ich parasite without killing the fish. As the fish are a higher order lifeform, they usually can survive a little more stress than a microorganism.

This actually is kind of how most ich-specific medicines work, too. They are poisonous to everything in the tank, but usually worse for the ich organisms than the fish. The formalin mixtures today are blends of formaldehyde and methalyene green. Both of which are poisons, but the blend of them lets each of them be used a much lower concentrations and still be effective in killing ich. The heat treatment also follows this philosophy: stress everything in the tank with heat, hopefully stressing the microorganisms to death before stressing the fish to death.

A big take away from the above is if a fish is sick or infirmed in some way other than just the ich, the stresses in trying to kill the ich may also kill the fish.

My suggestion would be that if you want to try the heat and salt method, I would be sure to have medication on hand just in case. There are strains of ich out there today that are tolerant of much higher temperatures than in years past. And, if the fish are showing high stress, you probably will want to scale it back and try a medication.

And finally, learn from the lesson here and understand how important a quarantine tank is. With proper quarantining of every single that that will go into your tank, there is no reason your tank should have ever gotten ich or any other disease. Quarantining works if done. Otherwise, you run the risk of situations like this where you're going to have to treat the entire tank and risk all the inhabitants.

No need to be so patronising! I haven't added anything new to the tank so it wasn't that that caused the ich.

There is a fair amount of misinformation about salt going around. One of the most frustrating is how salt reduces the osmotic stress and that somehow makes things better. Fish do not need to be relieved of osmotic stress when ill any more than human beings need to be rid of atmospheric pressure when they are ill.

Also, remember that while salt stresses freshwater fish, so do most every other medicine in one way or another. So you are left with a '6 of one, half a dozen of the other' type situation.

So, it kind of comes down to preference. Some people prefer and have had good results with salt, some haven't. I personally don't even have any aquarium salt at all. But that's my choice.

It's not patronizing. It is just a general recommendation for most everyone. I firmly believe that most people do not quarantine nearly enough.

Also, the ich didn't just magically appear. Despite the common platitude, ich is NOT in every tank, and is NOT in all water. The ich came in on something at some time. It may have been infecting the tank at a asymptomatic level for quite a long time, but it did come in with something added to the tank.
