Hi,
I recently bought a 34L tank and have 5 tetras and a small molly. I've been told that this is too many fish for this size tank, would that be correct? I'm unsure what to do as I don't have another tank.

thanks

It depends what kind of tetras and molly you have. That is quite a few fish for that size tank, but it is doable. The bigger question is did you cycle the filter first or just add water and fish? In a tank that small, if the filter isn't cycled, the ammonia will build up FAST.

hi thanks for replying.

i have 4 neon tetras and 1 gold tetra. The molly was a 'small molly' from pets at home. I did cycle the tank before i put fish in. I spoke to the guy in pets at home before i bought them, he said i could still get an algae eater and maybe a molly or two more. The tank seems really big for them though

Molly is defintitely too big, they should reach clos to 12cm and both active/boisterous.

The suitability of the tetra depends entirely on what they are.

I personally hate these tiny tanks, as even experience fishkeepers can suddenly have serious problems with the fish in a blink of an eye, they hold so little water and so toxic ammonia/nitrite can very quickly reach lethal levels.

The guy in the pets at home shop says that the small mollies will only grow to 5cm? i think it was a black molly i have (though it's gold in colour)

This was my point. I have had tanks for about 40 years. The smaller the tank, the less room for errors. Things can go from good to horrible in the blink of an eye. If it was me, I would keep the tetras, send the molly back and get some shrimp and a couple snails.

i've had the molly for about 3 weeks now, i don't think they would take it back?
