Hello, I've been doing loads of research on tiger oscars on google and such, which I've been thinking about getting one once I grab and cycle a 55 gallon tank

I've found the info on them to be quite.. Conflicting...

Some people say one tiger oscar would be fine as long as it has 30 gallons of water in the tank with decorations

some people say it's cruel to keep them in a tank smaller than 75 gallons

There has also been a lot of different opinions on their aggressiveness, from saying that if you put any fish in with the oscar, the oscar will be the only one left, to that the oscar should be kept in a species tank, as it's not too aggressive and might even get picked on by other fish

Those are my two main concerns, tank size and tank mate compatibility, and I felt it might be easier to ask on here, instead of looking at google articles and picking the opinions that I like best (which, let's face it, would probably end in tragedy)

So, what tank size would you recommend for a single tiger oscar?

If it can go in a 55 gallon, would there be room for tank mates? say, maybe 2 pairs of another compatible cichlid species and an algae eater/pleco of sorts?

well i believe that it shouldnt be in anything less than a 75 gallon but maybe 1 will fit in a 55, 30 gallon for a oscar is a big NO.

Yeah, I knew that already, I've got a 30 gallon now, and I can't even imagine an oscar being in it

The most common tank size I've seen is 55 for 1 and 75 for two

id say one oscar for the 55 and maybe a jack dempsey or a green terror?

I'll consider that. On a side note, I've already got 2 firemouths in a 30 gal tank, which I fear they'll outgrow.

How would they do with an oscar? They get about 6 inches long, and they're peaceful(except during breeding) assuming the water specifications will match up, I think they'd be fine.

Maybe some convicts, even? They're able to hold their ground, and they're hearty, but they're still pretty small.

I think if you're after tankmates you need at least 75 gallons.

If you consider the difference in length between the average 55 and 75, it isn't a huge difference in terms of the space it takes up, but enough to add an extra 20 gallons which can make all the difference to the fish.

you're right on that, I might aim for a 75 gallon instead, I thought they'd be much wider than the 55

Not significantly - depth and height can be deceiving, it's not just length.

Personally I'm in the 75 gallons for one oscar / 100 gallons for extra inhabitants camp, but I know that's not always realistic in terms of budget and accommodating the tank. But if you get the absolute biggest you can fit into where you want the tank, it saves upgrading and allows a bit more room for extra fish in the future.

Being a oscar keeper of previous  soon to be again, i feel a 75 is the least for one oscar, the bigger you could go for the better, depends on money and space, For example, i have just found myself a stunning second hand tank 5/2/2 with a fluval fx5 filter, heating and lighting all for £200..Bargain...
There are bargains out there if you dont mind second hand :good:

Yeah, I've been looking around for used tanks online, but I have very limited space (The biggest space I have, which is where I'm going to put the tank, is 53 inches long, so a 55 or 75 gallon is about as big as I wanna go)

I think I'll hold off on an oscar for a while. I don't like the thought of putting a fish in a tank that will just "work"

Have you looked into mid sized cichlids, such as tbar / keyhole / chocolate / convicts / firemouths / festivums / ellioti etc...

Take a trundle over to new world cichlid section and check out the pinned threads

If your in the uk look into the rio/Roma 240 or rio 300 both are 48" long and would be ideal for a cichlid community, which is, by the sounds, what you are aiming for.

Oscars may not be ideal but you could try something like a jd or gt with your firemouths and maybe a single convict or t-bar

I'm not in the UK, unfortunately. I have found quite a bit of 75 gallons which can fit in the space online and on craigs, so I'm gonna aim for that.

This is just a theoretical thing, but how would 2 firemouths, 1 convict, and 1 Green Terror do?

Would I be able to fit in any medium catfish (say, raphaels or pictus's?)

I don't know much about these guys, I've been reading up on them, their water preferences, decore, and compatibility, but the compatibility always seems to vary from site to site :/

The bigger the better. 75 gallons some say but I'd say over 100. I think it was Mattlee who had a terrible experience with an Oscar and green terror. My oscar gets along with others but then I know some people who have to keep them on their own. Its their own personalities that's the problem, each have their own.

When Mattlee was considering a GT he was advised that the GT would basically give Keith (his Oscar) a hard time as the GT was pretty much fully grown as was the Oscar... :/ When he added it everybody was soon forced to eat their words as the GT was attacked and subsequently died a few days later. :(

With Cichlids you're playing a very dangerous game and you will need a back up plan of either another tank if things go wrong or someone willing to take them from you pretty soonish. It's pot luck with them and alot relies on their nature, temperament and size/order when added.

I think you could get away with your Firemouths, a JD and/or a GT then something like a Sajica or HRP and a Salvini. Pictus would be great as a 'clean up crew' for uneaten food etc.
