When Mattlee was considering a GT he was advised that the GT would basically give Keith (his Oscar) a hard time as the GT was pretty much fully grown as was the Oscar... :/ When he added it everybody was soon forced to eat their words as the GT was attacked and subsequently died a few days later. :(

With Cichlids you're playing a very dangerous game and you will need a back up plan of either another tank if things go wrong or someone willing to take them from you pretty soonish. It's pot luck with them and alot relies on their nature, temperament and size/order when added.

I think you could get away with your Firemouths, a JD and/or a GT then something like a Sajica or HRP and a Salvini. Pictus would be great as a 'clean up crew' for uneaten food etc.

I'm gonna aim for the "or" or the "an/or" in there, and get one or the other, what is an HRP, by the way? Should I steer clear of the convict cichlids?

HRP is a Honduran Red Point. If wanting a Convict then go for the HRP. Far better colouration and less aggressive.

Consider different colours in your tank, i.e. Green Terror and a HRP rather than a JD and a HRP.

I was aiming for the convicts because they're more readily available at generic petstores than a majority of the more fancy cichlids, and the closest more fish-oriented store is an hour away, on a good day.

The ones I typically find at dempseys, oscars, terrors, convicts, firemouths, and a few "special offer" fish on occasion

I do have a quarantine tank on the side, though, for the new fishes, since they're typically not too healthy at the get go.

I guess I could order them online, but typically shipping is monstrous :X

Convicts can be a nightmare, as would Firemouths if kept in pairs... Either aggression towards other fish if they pair or aggression towards each other should they not pair.

Well, I guess I could do some online ordering, then. Am I aiming for only a single HRP?

I would stick with singletons of everything tbh... There will be eventually a fair bit of aggression and a breeding pair will be 1 less thing to worry about.

Stick with singles i have a pair of oscars that have claimed almost all of my 180 gal tank
