So after work yesterday, I went out to my little creek area where my minnow traps are set up, first trap I found a few crawdads, next one a dead snake (poor guy, I felt bad...:( ) then my last minnow trap I pulled up actually had some minnows in it!! Well on closer inspection, I was checking out what I had, here was a small like 2.5 inch, red/orange and blue/green stripes, little fish in it. I had no idea what he was until I came home and did my research, and found out he's a rainbow darter!!

Now can I keep them in an aquarium? They are very plentiful around here, and they are considered bait fish, The law says I can catch as many as I like, as long as I have a fishLicenseense, which I do!! They are such a lovly little fish, I was excited to see another lovly fish other than my basic, minnows, and chubs!!

Thats a great looking fish, no clue about putting it in your tank but nice find!! Where did you find your Kribs? You live close to me and I can never find anything like those!

Actually a friend of mine had them and they bred, so I took her babies, mine should be breeding soon, I would gladly give you some!! But as for the darters, Im setting up a planted tankin a few weeks, I could prob get away with putting them in there!! They are a very cute fish!

I dont see why it wouldnt work. That would be awesome about the kribs! I would love to buy some off of you when you have them. Its nice to know im not the only fishy person in this area!

Yes, you can keep them if the tank is large enough, but keep in mind that you must never release them back into the wild after they have been in your tank and it is best if you do not mix them (or anything from their tank) with "domesticated" fish.

No I wouldn't let them loose again, being that they are wild, they would prob kill most community fish, but I was thinking about setting natural tank based on my local area! I think it would be pretty neat to have like a 90 gallon bluegills, and sunfish. Or an even bigger tank with bass and things in it!!!wouldn't that be just amazing!!! :hyper:

That would be quite cool, check on the sunfish though as some species have the potential to grow up to a ft or more, while others remain small at around 6"

Ya im a hard core fisherwoman, lol So i have caught some super big sunfish, and bluegills. There are some very pretty fish around here!!

Hey,

Once my little sister caught a minnow and put it in my tank while I was away. (she thought it was a nice thing to do)

The minnow lived for about 2 years and got about 2.5 inches long. It liked to hang out with my danios.

You've got me thinking I should set up a eastern Canada biotope. Lol. Can you tell me how you make your minnow traps? I'll set one of these up too

Actually, I bought my minnow traps, they are fairly cheap!!
Here is a ebay link, http://shop.ebay.com/items/minnow%20trap?_dmd=1&_sop=12

Or there is casting nets, that you just throw in and pull them back up. The minnow traps you just put bread, hotdogs, and some people use dog food, and other misc. things as bait and leave them there for a couple days and just come back in a check them. Check with your natural resourse center, because some places dont allow casting nets!!

i used to keep sticklebacks, before i was on this site though!

Ya I think it will be a really fun active tank too!! Actually had a co worker that might donate a 55 gallon to me!!!! :hyper: I went to the river a couple weeks ago and found some nice peice of drift wood, that I plan on soaking. And I have some nice plants growing in my horse trough too. I have a good start just need to set my tank up lol

going to check my traps again today will let you know if i find some other strage fishy in there!!
