I currently dont have a thermometer in my tank and want one.Ive seen them on ebay for just over £2 inc delivery...are these any good? would they be accurate or are they likely to be miles out?

Can anyone recomend a particular make or type and provide an ebay link to it..im sure my LFS has a range of thermometers but wont be surprised if they want several pounds...

I use the marina stick-on glass ones. By me you can buy them in the pet aisle of a supermarket or just in your lfs. There only like $2.99

I use these. They are off a little but neer had any real issues with them. As long as they're within a couple degrees they are fine.

Using thermometers is always a much better idea than thinking that there's any accuracy whatsoever to a heater dial, so you're doing the right thing! I just use the cheap red ammonia therm inside a glass tube type, but its a great idea to have a couple, so you can get more suspicious if they get way off from each other. Its also a great idea to pay attention during your weekly water change to what the correct temperature feels like to your hand, that too may save you some day.

My personal preference is for the kind that are colored red and use an alcohol material to show temperature. The physical properties of these simple thermometers are well understood and are not high tech dependent. This kind of thermometer has been shown to be reliable for decades and I am ready to believe what they tell me. Other approaches may be accurate but they do not have a history that shows that I can rely on the results they display. I am aware that this means I am an old fashioned and set in my ways person but am undismayed by that characterization. It means that I recognize reliable indication and don't care if other methods are nearly as reliable.

I just use a regular thermometer that sticks to the side of the glass. seems to work well and they're cheap.
