Not sure if anyone here has watched the new series "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix. It has a very high rating on IMB of 8.7 which is up there along with series like "Game of Thrones" and "Breaking Bad". As I watched the first episode I was thinking it was about a true person, but it is not. What Hollywood and Netflix are attempting to do is make a fictional American female chess player reinventing Bobby Fischer.
When there is a real female Russian player that made the break through into the world of Chess which at that time was dominated by men. Her story would have made a much better series, and it would be based on the real person, not some made up character.
Mrs.Vera Menchik Stevenson lived in Russia during the over throw of the Russian monarchy by then Lenin's communist revolution. Her family had a very successful business that was taken by the communist in their bid to create a communist utopia in Russia. Since her father was viewed as a capitalist by the communist he had to flee Russia with his family moving to London, England. Because Vera could not speak English, she found chess and started playing it to get to know her way around in England. She soon found out that she was very talented at the game and became a Chess Champion at the age of 38 when her entire family was killed during a V1 bombing during Hilter's bombing of London.
Now that's a story worth watching and not some made up character, which is a insult to those of us who love the game of chess and want to hear about real people that excelled in the game.
