Yeah, I don't mess with trying to get "the right kind of algae." Each of my tanks has a cleanup custodial crew meant to nip any algae outbreak in the bud.

Zach's 20 gal tank currently has the most light per gallon & the the only algae issue is green on some of the wood. His cleanup crew is a bit light at just (3) Otos and they're picky algae eaters. The other 20 gallon has a single Bristlenose Pleco and (7) Trilineatus Corys and they keep thiungs quite clean, at least until I get that new light fixture. The 36 gallon has a single female Bristlenose plus (2) Otos, and (2) huge Mystery Snails. Not a sign of algae in that tank whatsoever.
I only have 2 apple snails... which require feeding since they can't find anything. My hoplo cleans up any remains he finds. Top layer or bottom layer, doesn't matter for him. He looks like he enjoys searching for food too. He often squeezes through the smallest places (even that arch of the wood, or behind my filter or between the Java Fern leaves.

I just took a pic of him doing his headstands while he's digging in the sand. It's so funny when he does this, he's completely perpendicular to the sand and keeps munching on it.

The amount of dirt he kicked up after that... X_X

He's a good looking fish FB. In effect he does what I have my Threelined Corys do, sweep the bottom of any leftover food. In doing that, they kick up the bottom sand which helps lift out any poo so the filter can suck it up. That's been working wonders for me in that tank.

Yeah, but I'm still waiting for that hole on his cheek to heal, it seems to be getting smaller, but what creature or whatever the culprit was, is a mystery.

There's no visible poop at the moment in there, my red swordtail removes it... Yuck!
At least they clean up after themselves. But when I catch poop I remove it with a net.
When my hoplo is stirring the sand like that, the little fry he's guarding arrives at the spot sometimes and takes a few of whatever that stuff is and eats it. lol.

hey lovelies, i recently aquired a nice group of corydoras paliatus
Nice, what do they look like? The ones with blots or the emerald ones?

Hey serious question to anyone who knows:

My favorite BN Pleco female had a 2 inch long string of poo that was clear & white colored hanging out of her butt. Is that normal? She eats like a pig and generally looks great and acts normal otherwise. This is the second time I noticed that with her. She's very wide bodied so I don't think it's an internal parasite........the last time the string was the same but the poo was more brownish red in color.

Sorry to sound disgusting but I really need to know.

That Cory looks great, how many did you get?

I got six of them. Now I have a grand total of 16 cories!!!

White stringy poo is usually a good indicator of internal parsites. My GTs have had them and they still ate like pigs. never knew anything was wrong till i saw their poo. You might look into a parasite treatment, soak the bns food in it and feed it to her.

That figures, since I don't have any meds on hand for treatment. I'll have to pick something up & treat the whole tank. Any recommendations?

EDIT:

I just checked Dr. Foster & Smith's website & they have Metronidazole listed as a good med to treat internal or external parasites. I already have the Seachem brand version of this & I can pre soak her algae wafers in water and she'll eat them for sure.

Do you think I should try treating her algae wafers with the Metronidazole tonight? This way she gets just about all of the meds right in her belly where the problem probably is? I can guarantee she will eat the wafers............as per usual. If that doesn't work I'll try treating the whole tank with the API general cure.

Or should I wait to see if I see the stringy poo again?

I personally would wait. Maybe it was something else in the tnk that she ate. If it is something that is happening often, then i would feed her wafers treated with it.

Thanks DM, that's what I'll do. It's not like she's emaciated or not eating and it's the first time I noticed it was white.
