Zebra danios have the ability to regenerate their own heart tissue. As a result, research is ongoing in an attempt to learn how to mend our own.

It's very cool, and one of the reasons I'm doing genetics at university. Not specifically cause of this, but because when I found out just what genetics could do I couldn't help but be mesmorized.

My mum was on about this as we used to have some zebra danios, i didnt believe her at first though lol!!

why are they shown in a Marine environment? if its a tropical tank. I want one of those shark things, in the background.

That's not a tropical tank, it's a digital animation of digital zebra danios on a background of a marine aquarium zoo with a large marine shark in it.

surely wild fish would be 'purer' bred and a better place to start the research ? i cant honestly see the danio numbers dwindling because somebody is researching this. and im sure you wouldnt complain if you knew somebody with a heart problem

They keep wild type stocks in the lab which they breed. Alot of the work will actually be being done on embryos/fry rather than adult fish anyways.

They'll keep stocks of allsorts, and the wildtypes are allowed to breed amongst themselves, as such they're a good representation of a wild caught (genetically speaking). Also genes that regulate something as important as the regeneration of the heart aren't likely to be very variable so (I'd have thought), would remain pretty much intact even if the fish are line bred for a specific mutation.

Actually my grandfather died of heart problems last week, cremating him friday.

I feel (and he'd agree with me) that taking so many fish from the wild and experimenting on them to further the lives of a species that is destroying the planet is wrong. If they want to use tank bred it's not so bad, but we don't need to dwindle wild numbers of any creature.
