Test Kit Duff?

Hi all,

my Api ammonia test ( lot no. 8481007 , exp around oct 10 ) kit was running low so I purchased a new one called Nutrafin Mini test kit

I thought id test this new kit for realability and did 2 tests for ammonia, one with the api kit, what was left reads 1ppm, the new nutrafin kit reads 0ppm, im not sure if i can trust this test kit or is one of these kits duff?

anyone got any ideas?

ive just tested the Nutrafin test kit with some neat ammonia I have in the bathroom for cleaning, made a mix of 75% ammonia, 25% water, got a postive result of ammonia, about 6ppm

i am assuming that this proves that the Nutrafin is working fine and that the Api kit as gone off

Anyone please confirm this conclusion please?

Sounds about right, the API kit may not be three years old yet (which is how long they should last), but could well have been exposed to higher temperatures while being shipped places or at the lfs, so it probably has expired now.

If you used 75% pure ammonia and got 6 ppm, the kit can't begin to find ammonia. It should take only a drop or two per gallon to get that reading on ammonia, not 75%. The nutrifin is not finding any of the ammonia that it should find. No matter how old the APi kit is, it sounds like it is more accurate this time.
