Hello all,

Excuse me being new to this and asking ignorant questions but I am trying to do this right.

Set up
•10 gallon fish freshwater fish tank (kit from Petsmart)
•Attempting a fishless cycle
•No live plants
•Used Seachem Prime to dechlorinify the water
•Used Fritz Turbo Start 7000 to jumpstart bacteria
•Ammonia source is Fritz Fishless Fuel Ammonia
•Water testing kit is a standard API Freshwater Master Kit.

Goal
5-6 fish (probably endlers livebearers) and maybe 1-3 shrimp.

I set the tank up at the end of September/beginning of October and measured the water via testing every two days or so. Finally on 10/16 I got 0ppm ammonia (yellow), 0ppm nitrite (blue), high PH (8.0? Brownish-pink?), and Nitrate around 10ppm. From research I was told once ammonia and nitrite are 0 add 2ppm of ammonia to see if the results are still 0 after 24 hours. Following the instructions (about 40 drops) of fishless fuel I was hopeful. Next day ammonia was back to darkish lime green (2.0-4.0) and Nitrite was purple (2.0-5.0).

Waited about two days to see if it cleared. Once again it did but well beyond the 24 hour mark. I repeated the drill only this time based on some recommendations I dosed a little less than 40 drops (about 25) since the water level wouldn’t be a full 10G plus decor/rocks. Ammonia cycled fine in 24 hours but ammonia is still dark purple. It starts a shade of lighter purple (0.2ish) and then after 5 minutes changes to a dark purple. Some my dumb questions are:

Is it simply just a wait and repeat the same exercise game. I fear the answer to this for my patience lol

Do I need to do a water change? I haven’t done one yet. have heard conflicting information you don’t need to until you add fish so admittedly and maybe ignorantly I haven’t done that. I do have a clean 5G bucket though on standby.

Would adding another brand of nitrospira (like niteout II) help expedite colony that is there already? Or would that be a waste/destroy the already existing bacteria?

Thank you everyone!! Here’s hoping I can go pick up fish eventually

Welcome. If you go with Endlers, are you thinking just males or do you have a plan for all the fry that will come along in short order...and keep on coming?
