Temperatures

Right, So i am just about to decide if i will take in discus or not, but, i thinnk the last issue could be the temperatures!

Here are the fish/plants i have just now

Min Max
cardinals 24 29
ottos 21 26
corys 20 25
rams 23 30

Eleocharis parvula 10 28
Eleocharis Vivipara 20 28

Discus obviously prefer warmer water - the ones i was looking at are kept at 29.

So, if i bump my water up to 29, how do you think my fish/plants will manage? My water is currently 26 degrees

Keep in mind that generally the temp at the bottom of the tank is cooler than the top.

I don't think a few degrees will hurt them, besides the temperature will go up gradually anyway

i have a couple temp gages in my tank, and seems to be 26 all over.. how good is that Its an external heater which helps i think.

The ottos are apparently already outside of their comfort zone!

When you say a few degrees wont hurt them....who/what is 'them'? I was thinking if i could bump the temp up to 28, so by 2 degrees, the discus would be happy. But i am not sure how the plants, corys and ottos would cope

Oh really? Thats good! What other fish do you have? Any that require low temps such as 25?

lots of plants and two wild cought tefe green discus aswell......

hmm ok. I wonder! I will try and find out about the Otos, and provided they are ok, I am good to go i think!

Ottos will suffer at that high temp, might get away with it with increased water flow (not good for discus) but the other fish should be fine

Someone in the catfish section said their ottos are at 29 and are ok.... do you disagree with this, or just think any hgher would top them off?

If i can get my tank to 29 degrees, thats 1 degree to many for the plants, 4 too many for the corys and 3 too many for the ottos. I guess the concern is more the corys rather than the ottos, but obvioulsy both are going to have issues!

What cories are they? Sterbai cories are happy at temps that discus need, which is why theya re the usual cories to accompany discus. But other cories (bronze, pandas, etc) need lower temps. They will live at the higher temps, but they won't live as long. What about swapping your current cories for some sterbais if you can get your lfs to order them in for you?

Haha, perfect, it is sterbai that I have! Wow, everything is falling into place- looks like discus will be in my tank afterall!!
