To answer the above questions

I have 3 pictuss cats about 4" and a plec about 5"

I have black sand only not a mixture

I have plastic /felt plants or a least in think there felt lol the realer looking ones (not that this is the best way to go but usually for a decent planted tank you need lighting or the plants wont prosper which my tank lacks)

I have redone my tank recently had gravel and now sand lol never will i return

Exactly what is it that makes the sand so mutch better?
