@malfunction What is a powerhead?? I will go and look it up, but at the moment, I'm puzzled.

Not only are fish and aquarium supplies going up up up, but many other everyday items are increasing.
Just look at grocery prices. Not only are prices increasing, but sizes of grocery store items keep shrinking while prices still go up. I remember when you could get a true half gallon of orange juice. Then the size dropped to 59 oz. And now I see several brands dropped to 46 ounces. Why not just drop the size to a quart at 32 oz and call it a day. They used to sell ice cream in the half gallon size. Now that size has been discontlnued and they sell the one and a half quart size. Do these companies think no one will notice that the size has dropped yet the price stays the same as before the drop. I'm so old, I remember when candy bars were a nickel. Now the size is smaller and the cost of a small candy bar is close to $2. Jeeeeeesh!

I use HOBs, canisters, homemade UGFs, bought sponge filters, homemade powerhead sponge filters, air driven box filters (homemade and old commercially produced ones) and plant filters. I'm not dogmatic about any, and they all work. They don't all work in the same set ups, but for what @Jennet's asking, whatever fits the size will work. I know my non verbal autistic nephew would destroy all those systems methodically and relentlessly if he knew the fishroom existed though. He has to take things apart and seems to never forget a target. That's a wild card.

The power cords going in are easy to identify. But you have no choice.

A power head (a small directional water pump) on a sponge can be effective. Yesterday, one of the last of my ancient aquaclears bit the dust after 20 years, and I have to rig a replacement this morning. I'll be switching over a powerhead sponge from another tank It's a messy job that'll take 5 minutes.
I always have 2 filters per tank for situations like this. Powerhead sponges are less convenient to clean than HOBs, but easier to defend. I imagine that if you have a heater, the plug is set up for no access. If they get pulled out of the water, yikes. You can run the power cord similarly.

I had one USB powered pump, but it failed before a year was out. It was a bit weak, but durability was an issue. It was a no name brand though. You might get something better.
