Tap Water Conditions

I know nitrates are in tap water but could ammonia and nitrite be present also? Didnt want to waste a test if there isnt

I have read some threads where members have had ammonia/ammonium in there tap water.

Ok,just did a test as been worried about my levels.i have a 300l tank,have done 3 water changes this weekend.i added about a quarter friday nite, did 50% both yday and today.before and after ammonia .25 and nitrite is .2 it doesnt changd atall after the water change. Just tested tap water it says between .25 and .5 ammonia and .1 nitrite. Could my test be wrong?i bang and shake the bottles.its made by red sea

I'm pretty sure i'm right in saying if you dechlorinate your tap water with seachem prime then you will be ok.
Have a read of this:
Prime® is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime® removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime® may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime® also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime® is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime® will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever adding or replacing water.

I normaly use prime but ran out and my LFS didn't have any so bought something different. That could be the cause of the results! But not sure how to explain why it doesn't reduce even slightly on the nitrite after water changes! Obs I add the chemicals.
