I'm putting a bigger tank in my sons room, only about 60gallons but I;m wondering how safe laminate is to take the weight, this is only cheap laminate as well

does th weight distrbution make this ok

any idea how heavy a 48x 18x 20 tank is with glass substrate stand and water is and I mean a rough guess cos I weigh 15 1/2 stone and theres no problems with me standing there for example

Mine, including my 6fter are on cheap fake laminate with no prob so far. THe big 2 are have a concrete floor beneath but my 4ftx18wx15d is on laminate over floorboards - touch wood (lol) so far so good 2yrs on.

like the touch wood bit lol

its in his bedroom so its upstairs but i suppose if it can take drawers and beds and things should be no probs?

Biggest I've risked upstairs is 100l but my floors are dodgy. If you are concerned it could be worth putting a solid base to the stand to spead the weight evenly.

don;t say that lol

its a juwel so it has a big base any how which should distribute the weight pretty evenly

Might be better off making a kind of tiled area for the stand and butt the laminate up to this. Water spillage (water changes) on cheap laminate will cause it to warp and separate in time and it will look awful. The tiled area will enable you to wipe up any spillages easier
Just a thought

Also thought I would point out that if your stand has feet like my vision cabinet then the pressure might be too much over such small area. I think that tank sounds like a lot more than 15 stone tbh more like double!

Have you any spare laminate floor boards? Might need them!

i had a juwel 240 in my bedroom on laminate flooring and that was fine mate

i had jambos tank on laminate for a yr and a bit with no concequence, but then BigC didnt recommend that idea to me, you can get cheap floor tiles so yeah i would do that, better safe than sorry :)

i had it running the same direction as the seams too ( not recommended :D )

i have a 180 ltr tank on laminate flooring upstairs

but the difference is mine is directly above the main beam , ive had a 4 foot as well, to test i once got me and 3 mates to stand as close to the tank as we could, the floor was fine it didnt bow , nothing!

here is a piccy of how my current 180 ltr tank stands, on laminate flooring upstairs

you could always use 1 inch thick kitchen worktop , making it 4 or 5 inches bigger than the base would be ideal

Well I make that 270l, so the water alone would be 270kg=42.5stone. I don't think the laminate is any different to any other floor covering in terms of weight bearing strength-it's the floorboards and joists below which are taking the weight.
There's only 2 ways to find out if they'll hold it, and one of them can be rather damp

The water alone in that tank will weigh 283 Kg. Add in the weight of the glass, the stand and the gravel and it could add up to be fairly heavy. The glass on a tank that size is heavy enough that it takes 2 people to handle it and the gravel will be about 30 Kg minimum. The stand can be anything from 10 Kg on up depending on the model, style and details of construction. The light strip and filter are almost negligible by the time yu have well over 350 Kg accounted for.
