Tank Is Cycled

Harlequins reckons Pandas are fine in a newly cycled tank as long as your water conditions are immaculate.

How do you guys rate Pygmy Cories in this? The guy in the LFS told me the reason you don't see many of them is because they're hard to keep. I thought it was strange coz it was the first time I'd heard that.

I think all tanks vary,my 12 pygmys were in the main tank for around a month before i lost one, then i decided to set up a pygmy tank to see if they'll bred,i added 11 pygmys to a newly set up tank with a mature filter. and fingers crossed they're doing fine and i have lots of wee juvi's as well... :)
But i have heard of peeps losing pygmys etc,but has mentioned, people losing fish could be because filters just aren't fully cycled therefore leading to loses, especially pygmys & pandas that are more sensitive than others.

Thanks. The way I feel at the moment, I won't be adding any more fish to my tank. Which would be a shame coz I really wanted some Corys.

I find the C habrosus are tough little guys who are happy to spend their time with my endlers. This is one of them.

The C hastatus I find to be very shy but not at all delicate. These are pictures of some I got 2 years back. All 13 of them are still alive and thriving.

My C pygmaeus are also fairly hardy and live with my Heterandria formosa. This is a picture of one swimming along behind a female Heterandria tank mate.

I brought home some of those pandas and added them to my hastatus tank only to lose most of them in about a month. At the time I had been using that tank for my hastatus for about 6 months. I will agree that not all cories are equal in hardiness.

When it comes to why you never see pygmy cories at the LFS the answer is easy. They are not big enough to catch your eye as you walk by their tank and much of the LFS business relies on impulse buying by people who notice something and like what they see. For the hastatus, I had to go to a LFS that carries a much better selection than most do, search for the label on the tank that said they had some hastatus in the tank and then get an employee to stir up the fish in the tank with a net to get them to come out of hiding behind an ornament. All of mine were hidden behind a single ornament and were trying hard to be inconspicuous.

So Pandas manage to keep on keeping their reputation for lack of hardiness, at least during their initial couple months.. WD

Oh I like the C hastatus, they're lovely! They tend to come under the umbrella of "Pygmys" don't they?

Right, all 3 ARE the pygmys Caz. Go for it Caz - I think your idea to switch from Pandas to Pygmys is a good one (assuming you can find the little things, haha! (Although, amazingly I saw some of them at one of my very own local stores!) (BTW, I called a guy in Pittsburgh to ask some questions about your Pandas but he hasn't called me back.)

I totally agree with you OM,when i went to look for some pygmys,i totally bypassed the tanks they were in has i was expecting larger fish and yep they were in hiding when the man pulled back the bogwood and there they were

I suppose I have the opion of ordering online.....

There is too much yellow in my tank I've decided. Of my 5 fish, 3 are yellow :S

Yeah, all your angst about when to add them if you got them and the stuff I was writing to OM speculating about whether various cory species were truly sensitive or whether it was just stories from uncycled tanks was making me itch for more information and I rooted around in a drawer and lucked out finding the business card from a fantastic cory guy who has given talks around the country and who I've talked with and I figured out how to call him (he lives way across the country from me.) Anyway I may never get a response or may have to try email, so probably nothing will come of it. WD (I realize you are on to the Pygmy's now, it just got me interested about the Pandas)
