All,

I have recently purchased a Scopas Tang (see link http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=381). I am having a difficult time having the tang eat directly from the veggie clips. I am offering commercial seaweed products. He/she will eat the offering if a piece is broken off by another tank mate and is floating in the water.

Has anyone had this problem in the past, and if so how did you remedy?

Thanks

a. how big is your tank
b. have you tried any other food?
c. try putting the clip in a location where the tang feels safe to eat

hope this helps

Thank you for your reply.

a. My tank is 75 us gallons
b. I have tried several of the commercial foods
c. I have attempted to place the clip in different areas of the tank but still he will not eat.

i had a big arguement about tangsbeacuse i wanted to a scpoas in a 90 us gallon but every1 and now myself agreed on 110 us gal min espically when it reaches about 5 inches so it could just be stress beacuse they need alot of volume and swimming area so if it is stress theres not alot to do try to feed at night maybe that will help

it could be down to stress if he isn't eating at all and 75gals is on the small side for any tang, even a scopaz tang. does he pick around the rocks at all? don't forget that the clip is totally foreign to him. i also hope that you are willing to invest in an upgrade of tank size as soon as he outgrows your 75gallon tank?

The 75 tank should be sufficient for his needs. He is the only large fish in the tank and I have seen other aquarist hold this fish in similar conditions. With that said I do plan on an upgrade in the future, probably a 124.I do not believe he is stressed as he does pick at the rocks and will eat the commercial products if one of the other fish breaks off a piece and it floats in the water column.

Maybe he just needs to get used to his new home? :dunno:

Even a full-grown Scopas Tang will live fine in a 75 gallon tank, so don't worry about that.

To all advocates of the "Tangs need huge tanks and will automatically stress and die every time when kept in a smaller tank" belief: is there actually any evidence at all to support that thought? :dunno:

P.S.
In a mere 40 seconds of google searching, I have found six separate advocates for the opinion that a Zebrasoma scopas can live fine in a 75 gallon.

I tend to agree with you Lynden with respect of size requirements for Tangs. I have seen many aquarist hold tangs of this types in tanks of 75 gallons. Of course, I do believe that a bigger tank would be optimal. But, of course, the bigger the tank the better corresponds with any fish for this hobby.

I will attempt to grind up the commercial products today to see if that helps.

Thank you all for your help.

look when i go on about tank size for tangs its my personal opinion, i liken it to catching a wild bird and stuffing it in a cage, i feel its cruel.

its not like i'm saying "get it outta the tank right now"
