Ok, so I was at PetCo a few days ago and seen their version of Moss Balls ( Java Fern tied around styrofoam. :( ) Went to PetSupermarket and they had genuine Marimo Moss Balls ( algea balls ) for $4.99 each so I got a few... I was wondering if I can tear one up and attach it to some rocks and wood so it looks like its natural growing. I have read of people using fishing line, cotton string etc. to fasten other kinds of moss but never got a clear answer if I could do it with these... I was thinking of using fishing line but since this is so slow growing I would not want to see the fishing line for months, I also read about people super gluing moss to decorations but I was wondering if I can do it with this succesfully? I am worried that the part that gets glue on it will die and detach from what it is fastened to!!

What do you guys and gals think ????

Not that I've personally done it (I'd feel bad ripping one up, they look so cute), but I've heard it's been done and have seen pictures of it. It's just a ball of fuzzy algae, and I've read that some people have had it spread outside of the area they wanted and become a nuisance.

Anyways, the moss balls seem to be hollow in the center. Rather than shredding it to bits, I think it might be easy to push your fingers into it and "peel" it open, then flatten it out so you have a mat of moss. And then try fishing line so it could naturally attach. If it gets too unsightly with the line or just doesn't work well, you could always pull it back out and do the glue method. Also you could try a very thin sewing thread in a green color to match the moss so you don't see it as much, and it might just eventually fall apart once the moss is attached.

Edit: I looked it up, and it seems people place a plastic mesh bag type thing over the flattened out marimo balls while they grow in. Which is a lot more unsightly than the line or thread or glue, but I think it'd be the best way to get the job done.

Thanks for the insight... thats actually what I was thinking of doing, I will try with the super thin fish line first and if I dont like the look I will try some string since my girl like sewing stuff she has tons of it... If either one does not look too good I will try the glue... I just don't want glue on stuff in case I change my mind in the future!

So..... I eneded up taking 2 of the Marimo balls, puncturing and flattening them out ( like Katty suggested ). I attached them to 2 of my smaller rocks with the 6Lb line and I think it looks GREAT!! You can BARELY see the line and only if you look for it. My girl actually said that now the rocks look kind of like CHIA PETS :hyper: but I like them!!! I am soo glad I tried the line before messing with glue... :thanks: THANK YOU KATTY :thanks:

I will post a few pics either later tonight or tomorrow and yall tell me what you think!!!!!

I'm glad it worked out for you, I can't wait to see the pics

SORRY for all the pics I am kind of TiPsY :drink:

i dont know about ChiaPets lol but i do know thats what i tryed to do! but i didnt use anything to tie it to the rock...and mine eventully feel apart :( looks good either way!

if you need to attach it to rocks or bog
wood i use hair nets i find they work well and with
them been dark in color you dont notice them that much
fishing line is a good way as well and i have been told
super glue can be used as well and i have used silicone sealer
to glue bog wood and rocks and slate together

ive used superglue ( gel) in my marine tanks in the past with no issues :)

Hair net?

I've used thread with my plants; I think the theory is that the moss will grow and cover the line.

yes, you know one of those things that old dears put on at night .. works on the same principle as the thread

I know what hair nets are, I meant hair nets as a suggestion :) (not that it reads that way once you point it out).

Fell apart! ... did you use the real Marimo balls or the fake crap from PetCo ( Java Moss around styrofoam )...
HOPEFULLY they don't fall apart in my case, and how did you make them stay in place without tying down??

well, yes it was a real "moss ball" but i couldnt tell you what type! and i buy mine in the uk, i still have it but its now in smaller bits  hasnt really grown that much either  and i dont know i just sort of "pushed" it ontop of a plant pot inbetween rocks and it sayed there lol

Well they are supposed to be REAL slow growers...I have also read that if you want to keep in a ball you have to turn it over every once in a while to keep its shape and to keep it from turning brown on the bottom side...........
