Suggestions on Foggy Tank

You are wayyyy over stocked their.

2 fancy guppies, 2 green cories, 2 platies, 2 gouramis, 1 CAE. I just removed 2 goldfish

Cories= 5-6 fish atleast, and need atleast 30 gallons
Platies= Fine must have atleast 10 gallons
Guppies= Need atleast 20 gallons
CAE= Needs atleast 30 gallons

So you are already over stocked, what kind of gouramis are they? Other than that I would say that you just get a 30 gallon tank.
why do you need such a large tank for guppies when they are so small. 20 gallons is alot of space is that us gallons or uk gallons, because there is about a litre of difference between them.

How many guppies would you put in a 20 gallon tank.

Unless my poor reading skills have let me down again, nobody has actually asked what the murkyness looks like! Is it a green murkyness or more grey/white? If it's grey/white then you most probably have a bactrial bloom which will not harm your fish at all. Give it time. Maybe the sponge is too small for the amount of bacteria i your tank to live in. Try a bigger sponge?
If the water is green then you have too much light and/or high nitrate levels. Test your water for nitrate. Anything above about 40ppm is seen as a sign of insufficient water changes or overstocking (see most posts above!).
You also don't give details of your water changes. How much, how often?
If your tank is only 3 weeks old then it's probably at the end of its cycle (from the readings you gave) which means that the bacterial colony is big enough to sustain the bioload but may not have reached a steady equilibrium. Maybe the bacteria population has just got to settle down. 3 weeks isn't long in fishkeeping terms. Give it time.

The tank is 3 months old...the cloudy water is milky white...no sighns of green. I change water approx. every 2 weeks...about 25% and vacuum gravel.

Oh I have never kept guppies before, so I went to liveaquaria.com and looked it up. They said that guppies need 20 gallons, so thats what I put.

I'd see if you can return some fish to a fish store, especially the CAE. When it matures it will be the only thing left in your tank :crazy: The guppies and platies are fine in a 10, the cories aren't ideal, but they should be ok. I'd try to get rid of the gouramis and the CAE.

Have you asked your fish stores? A lot will take fish in :thumbs:
But...but...but...I love my gouramis :-( :-( :byebye: , besides my lfs are Petco & Petland Discounts and I dont think they'll take the CAE back.
You really need to get the CAE out because as I said before, it will soon kill everything you have. I would approach the store you bought it from with a sold under false pretenses, they should not have sold you that fish :no:

Petland should be pretty good about it, actually. Though I've never dealt with Petland Discounts, my preferred LFS is Petland. More knowledgable staff. They take trade-ins, returns, and everything. They even took in two goldfish that were like.. 10" each because the guy had no more room for them.

If you're looking to get money for your fish when you take them in though, that might be another thing.. I know that at my Petland I can sell them my baby guppies once they're old enough, and I'm about to trade in some fish I just bought yesterday. 6 harlequin rasboras, but they're not doing as well in the tank as I'd hoped. They immediately started picking on the neons for some unknown reason, so I'm trading them in for more neons.

Try calling the store to see what their policy is on it. Usually they're pretty good.

If it's milky white then I'd guess at a bacterial bloom. Give it time to settle down. I'd also keep an eye on the nitrates anyway. With that many fish in a small tank the levels will rise quickly. Up your water changes to 25% per week. That will also help reduce nitrates.

Don't worry about the fish starving, as cold blooded creatures young growing fish can easily go days without food, and adults weeks, with no ill effect. Even young fish will promptly stop growing, but will take much longer to actually starve to death. Mouth brooding cichlids go for 4 weeks without food on a regular basis!

So you guys dont think he'll do better in a friend's 36g tank with gouramis (i know they're flat but he'll have more room) and platys?

Just an update on the fog in the tank....still there. Not getting better. If this was a bacteria bloom then I should think it would have been gone by now since it has been almost a month. I dont know what else to do...:-(

Your filter is not up to the job if you buy another filter you will notice the difference straight away as you are overstocked.

I just bought a new filter...I had the Whisper 10 before and I went out and bought the Whisper 20...same problem.

Put the old filter in as well as I have two filter running in all tanks, you have some big fish and your filter wasn't meant for those type of fish.

I'll try that but I'll have to see what I can do with the hood since it doesnt have the openings for 2 filters. Thanks
