Substrate Finally Changed...

Well, I got in from work at 5:30pm. Decided to do the change as had nothing else to do at 6:30pm. Ive changed from sharp gravel to sand as I have a few bottom feeders.

Ive just sat down at 11:25pm! Haha im never doing it again. I didnt enjoy it one little bit! But does look good...

Also, sand takes a hell of alot of washing out, and it appears I didnt do it enough as the water is slightly cloudy. Is this so bad? Ive added a new water polisher to my filter so hopefully this will sort it in a few days.

Moral of the story is: Just get the right substrate the first time around.

I wouldn't like to do it talking to one of my friends in fish keeping and he thought about doing this as he had a few cory cats and he had a good think and he got some perspex plastic the right size of the bottom of his tank and took all the deco out and placed the perspex plastic then place the sand on top, but lost a couple of inch's but was a lot easier this was a year ago and still going fine

Im glad its done now. Worst part is, I regretted it exactly half way through but was way too late to quit! Catching all my fish was also a nightmare.

Will they be ok in the misty water?

It should be once it settles, just hope you use the right sort of sand with no chemicals in it, what sort of sand did you use?

I was advised on this forum to use 'childrens play sand' from Argos. Apparently alot of people use it here. Its alot heavier than I though and I ended up putting it around 3 inches deep! Got abit carried away.

But on the plus side, ive de-potted my plants and planted them nice and deep in the sand

Sounds good to me I know the children's play sand is heavy just got some new sand myself for the kids sand box be nice to see some photos when all as settled.

yea i did that change a few months back, then once my ACF showed signs of getting ready to breed i had to take the sand back OUT!
their eggs are so tiny, there would be no way to separate them from the sand, and my white sand would have looked just like the eggs, so every grain had to be taken out, can you say NIGHTMARE!

Oh god, that would be a nightmare! I dont think I could bring myself to do that...

I shall def get some pictures, this morning its a little clearer but still cloudy. Ill give the water polisher a clean and stick it back in

I used the same sand took about 2 30% water changes to clear up the water, but then I dropped the filter wool which was collecting all the sediment in the tank lol, so clouded up again a little

give it a few days then check your water
parameters i bet it looks good though

In nature fish very rarely live in crystal clear water. Many, many natural fish environments actually resemble pea soup. They are fine with a load of sediment. The only real reason for a crystal clear tank is for our enjoyment, not the fishes.
