I'm looking to change substrate in my 55 gallon tank. I'm currently planning on doing it in sections (quarters or thirds) with a divider, waiting a week or two between to allow the new substrate to build up some bacteria before removing more of the old. Would this be an effective, unnecessary or ineffective method? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Not necessary. Just take a bunch of your old substrate and place it in an old panty hose and tie it off. Just keep it wet. Then plop it in with the new substrate and leave it in there a few weeks. Then pull it out. :)

Also dont do what I did....definitely remove the fish :) I didnt and accidentally poisoned my fish by releasing anaerobic pockets
