Stupid West Coast !

The cost of keeping fish tanks in my area is going up. WHY I don't know because we got so much snow and rain this season. It's not fair in fact all of America got lots of rain and snow this year. My husband just told me I can't have any bigger tanks, and I can only do WC every 2 weeks. I said NO I will take less showers I have to do weekly WC.

Grrrrr does the cost of water effect your fish keeping habits?

water meters are getting more popular in the uk
now and has for household gas and electric
there going through the roof

as well as the cost of fish keeping
the fish alone are starting to cost a fortune
and all the stuff to go with them as well

is it worth setting a tank up these days
i am still think twice about it

Still "free" (as in unmetered water) here. Just pay a fixed charge yearly based on the size of the property. If it becomes metered then I will just have to find the extra money, as I'm sure it would mean an increase in bills.

Snowflake, I like your idea of stopping washing. Your husband might soon think again about letting you do weekly WC when he has to put up with a stinky wife !.

Less showers = ewww (plus the ammount of water used in a 10min shower is tiny).

Just reduce the ammount rather than the regularity of the water changes, so 10-20% every week, won't harm the fish provided you have good filtration.

our water is on a meter and a friend down the road isnt and our bills are quite a bit less than theirs even with up to 9 tanks running at once with lots of water changes. we also have a 2 year old daughter so lots of clothes to be washed etc etc

Here in Michigan the actual water cost is pretty much meaningless. My bill this month was $89, but 86 and change was fixed fees that aren't based on my usage. Daily showers, a temperamental toilet, water changes, washing the car, and watering the yard, I didn't even hit $5 in usage.

humm interesting respones. maybe it will not be that bad after all. We are getting water meters and the price is going to go up too. SO it will be interesting to see how this works. Thanks guys.
