It's not really so much that they're stupid, they're just completely and totally different than anything we can relate to. They don't think the way we do, they don't feel the way we do, their memory doesn't function on the same level... no, you're right that they're not "stupid," but considering they way they function, I do feel that it's a perfectly fair assumption that they don't particularly mind being housed in a tank as long as conditions in that tank are good (and by all reports they are.)

If an environment can sustain live fish, fish will move in. that doesn't mean that a poor environment for fish is okay because they are stupid. I'm not sure what his fish are kept like, and frankly I wouldn't be the one to ask regarding how happy his fish will be, but I think its very dangerous to write them off as stupid..
I never said that Blue gills were stupid, they are much more intelligent than most fish, but unlike larger cichlids, they probably wouldn't get too distressed over a change in environment, whereas if I were to move my severum, he would probably sulk for a while, hide, and be very skittish if the environment was not to his liking :) All fish that we own today were taken out of their natural environment at one point in time, and most can thrive in capitivity.

I really don't see a difference between people catching fish in south america and people catching native fish from near their home. You can keep fish, or you can eat fish, not much else can be done with them...but there are some twisted things in this world (Bowls)

Fish aren't too smart compared to most animals, and if they can eat and breed, they are pretty much as happy as can be.
