Am I being thick or are most fish we keep wild caught?
your being thick.

barely any species are wild caught today, they are all breed in the far east or asia.

Though most of the SW fish are wild caught. Some FW are, but not alot of them.
you are being rather rude. I agree with Tokis and CFC. You really need to check your wild statements......

okay i've just wasted 1/2 an hour of my life reading that little lot.

one thing to add.
     :hyper: :fun:

Trevelyn1015 nice fish.

by the way any of you that have cardinal tetras and dont want wild caught fish, you should have done your research.....

I respect you for taking good care of your fish.

If we all took the amount of time and energy it took to respond negatively to posts like this and instead aimed our anger at places who mistreat fish and other animals, we'd get a lot farther in this lifetime.

Trev, I've been on the receiving end of some controversial posts before, I feel your pain. I'd have to say keep right on doing what you're doing - I can almost guarantee you that you're taking better care of your fish than 90% of the folks (outside this forum, of course) on the planet who just plain either don't give a crap or don't want to invest the time/energy to try and learn.

More power to you.

Hi,

Thanks Toxis , CFC and Bloozo for the support .
WRS I honestly think you see the fish trade through rose coloured glasses. If you say that some tropical fish are farm bred in the fare east thats fine, I believe you.But consider this , transportation of them is an issue surely!

This hobby however you look at it, however careful you are, however much space, time and care you give to your pets.We are still "cageing" wild animals.

you surely make no sence.

rose colored glasses because I say where they are from?

and the question askes am I being thick, so I answered as how he asked. I do think, and I do read, there are alot of species breed in the far east.

if it was illegal for people to transport fish from body of water to body of water then why would the government sell fishing liscenses?
why would people catch fish in a large body of water and transport them to their own smaller ponds?
the only possible thing imo that is wrong with trev's tank is the two turtles he has in it.
some of you people need to think before you type and not jump all over people its kind of ironic when the forum is called the "friendliest fish forums around" because some of you arent being too friendly.

just one more point to add.

most fish are quite uninteligent (stupid) animals, i know some will beg to differ, but as long as their fed well, have clean water, enough space and are not mixed with other species that attack them they dont care where they are.

its like in public aquariums where fish live longer then they would in the wild because they are fed well. a friend has a type of dragon (lizard, also not a smart animal) from central australia and its 5 years ond and in the wild studies have been done and they live for one year.

so u could argue that they could even be better off in captivity.

PS i am with you on the turtles not because they eat fish but ive had turtles and fish togather and the waste from grown turtles is huge and hence the filtration on that tank was massive.
see ya later

Good point, most of my fish (Besides my more intelligent cichlids) don't care where thay are or what they are being housed with, they eat, they poop, and they live :dunno: :)

I've always wanted to take sunfish or bluegills from pond/ lakes on long island or upstate NY, native fish are pretty cool and would probably be better off under an experienced aquarist's care

Nice fish trevelyn, good luck with them

And sometimes they eat poop

I agree. Most fish really aren't that bright, so they're not adversely effected by being removed from the wild and housed in a tank so long as conditions in the tank are good.

Blue gills are close relatives of cichlids, GIve em some credit, They care about were they live, its a necessity for survival

Well everyone keeps on going on how everyones being realy nasty to travelyn, but who?? I just can't find anybody who's actually said anything nasty to him.
As for me, all i've said in this conversation is how(before the pic was removed) some people may not like seeing the fish with a hook impaled through its mouth, and i asked him wether he had the right food for the fish and mentioned it might eat his guppys.
Im sorry but i don't see the big deal here and why as soon as there is suspicion of everyone not getting along, everyine has to get defensive saying they were always nice from the beginning and everone else should be ashamed of themselves etc etc..

That they are, but some of the places that I've seen them living in (Man made specifically) aren't completely adequate ;)

Blue gills and sunfish belong to perciformes, which contains cichlids, anabantoides, nandids, gobies, and more. Cichlids IMO are the most intelligent :)

If an environment can sustain live fish, fish will move in. that doesn't mean that a poor environment for fish is okay because they are stupid. I'm not sure what his fish are kept like, and frankly I wouldn't be the one to ask regarding how happy his fish will be, but I think its very dangerous to write them off as stupid..
