Hi, I'm new to the forum. I'm concerned that our female guppy gave birth to 3 fry, that we know of, about a week and a half ago. Meanwhile she keeps getting bigger and bigger. Is it common occurrence for a female guppy to drop a few fry and then drop the rest later? Could she still be pregnant? Should I be worried about something else?

me and my friend have had this happen a few times. my platy gave birth to 4 fry and was still fat and she is probably going to have them sometime today. same thing with a molly that i had and with my friends guppy. dont worry about it, just watch for her to 'square off' and look for fry if she gets skinnier. :good:

Welcome to the forum Mwink.
In general a guppy will drop all fry in just a few hours. Unless you saw her start her drop and watched until she stopped, I am not too surprised at those results. Having only 3 fry survive a drop is not at all unusual in a young female, especially if you only have poor cover for the fry. At a week and a half out she is probably developing the next drop which will be due in a little over 2 more weeks from now.

Looking back I realized we saw the three fry on April 11th. She was pregnant again and gave birth sometime overnight between May 4th and May 5th.

Her and her first 3 babies were the only inhabitants of the tank at the time, I guess she could have ate some if she was hungry.

About a month before we tried to introduce a Java Moss plant into the aquarium. It was an awful decision. Not sure what happened 2 days later only a few 'sticks' we're floating and all the green was in piles on the rocks and clogging the filter. After removing the 7 guppies we had into a big bowl so we could get the remains of the Java Moss out we did a water change added the required amount of nite out ll and changed the filter in hopes everything would be fine. Unfortunately over the next couple of weeks we lost 5 guppies. A week before we saw the 3 fry the 6th guppy died. We have had our water in the tank and from the faucet tested numerous times. The tank water was not too good after the plant died but it cleared up good. We have all non living plants now.

We added 2 little catfish and and algae eater. They didn't bother the 1st batch of fry and they don't bother this batch. We are just glad everything is normal and look forward to having our fry grow to adult.

Thanks so much for the information.

I know this is a late response...

Weirdly, one of my guppies is doing this right now. She had her last batch of fry (31 of them) on April 20th... and on May 9th she dropped just 1. Its very puzzling actually. She is definately without any shaddow of a doubt still pregnant (she holds her babies a good 1-2 weeks after I can see their eyes) as I can see loads of eyes in there... but still none of the rest have been born and I have no reason to believe she is in any sort of distress... just weird she dropped one so soon.
