Snails

After having bought a new plant for my tank i am finding small snails, i have never had them before, so can some one tell me about a fish that likes to eat them or some treatment, thanks Mike

i do believe that clown loaches love to eat snails. also you can get assasin snails and they eat other snails too. try putting a piece of lettuce in your tank at night and in the morning it will have snails on it eating. then ya just take it out and the snails too! you'll have to do that more than once if you have a lot of snails.

I had a 'problem' with some shelly interlopers too. Got some assassin sanils (which look cool anyway) and they soon sorted 'em out.

However, I do have a few snails that appear to have a gold sheen to their shells - the assassins won't touch 'em. Any clues anyone?

I've got those weird gold snails too. No idea what they are but i got loads!!! Got more snails than grains of gravel

Have you tried feeding less?

How big do those golden shelled snails get and what shape is their shell?

I think there's so many cos i had a load of new plants and they came in on them but i will try cutting back the feeding thanks.

I dunno how big they get cos they've only been in the tank a few weeks but the biggest one i've seen is probably 2-3mm across so far. The shell seems more flat than vertical if that makes sense

MTS? Malaysian trumpet snails. Almost nothing eats them and they live in the gravel normally. Google for images. If it is them, their population is almost directly related to availability of food.

Otherwise have a look at Physa. They normally won't over breed and again, population will vary with available food.

I've come back from University last night to a flourishing but snail packed tank.

Only have a single BN plec (my 3 gourami's died in the week i was leaving so i decided to wait till xmas to see about getting new fish)

The plec is fed only once a week with a few pellets so I doubt this could have caused the vast numbers I can see.

For me I think the problem is algae.

I plan to clean out the worst today, but of course leave some for the BN, I think that will help cut the snail numbers down.

Apart from the waste they produce though I quite like having them, and the BN looks to be growing nicely so I dont think hes been too effected by them.

I had a look and it doesn't look like either of those types but they are still tiny at the moment so it's hard to tell

Well, the only other "pest" snail which is commonly found at home would be the ramshorn.. excluding coldwater snails and ones one usually pays money for

Well they are still "baby" snails at the moment and the only way to describe it is as if their shell is gonna spiral upwards rather than the usual shell shape and it looks like it has a golden sheen to it. Guess i'll have to just watch and see what they turn into

Edit - Just found a pic of some baby ramshorns and that's sorta what they look like. Guess i have them. Anybody want some? lol

That is what they look like as far as i can tell. The site sats they are ramshorns

Assassin snails will eat MTS, assassin snails usualy target the bigger snails first. It may have someting to do with leaving smaller ones for offspring.

To the OP they do sound like ramshorn snails, as said before cutting down on feeding the fish will help keep the numbers down. Or get some small assassin snails, they will keep the numbers down.
