Snails What Can I Do To Stop Them

well I had a credit at a LFS so I went ahead and got a clown loach, so far i don't see a big difference but i am gonna do some house keeping in the tank this weekend and hopefully i can get them to where he can mange the small remaning snails

its almost impossible to not get snails on your plants.

barbs have been known to eat snails as well, they are a tab bit milder then a chiclid.

I had a snail problem in my 20 gallon Amazon tank - pond snails hitching on purchased plants. I removed my corys to my 55 gallon tank and added 3 striped loaches to the Amazon. They cleaned up the snail problem in a week, so I thoguht. I switched everyone back (and what a pain in the tochis that was!), and, 2 days later, I had a snail problem.

The way I am dealing with it now is less feeding, peat in the filter, and occasionally scooping up a bunch of them and feeding them to my turtle.

Corys won't eat snails, and loaches and cories, I am told, do not mix well.

I have heard that banjo catfish will eat snails, and they mix with nearly anythnig (except, to my sorrow, turtles. :( )

I just stumbled across this today but I'd like to suggest that you look into south american puffers, they aren't really agressive and will have a great time hunting your snail population to extinction. They are from the same area as most tetras so would make a tankmate that really fits well with what you already have. The clownloach will eat snails but like has been mentioned, he will get way too big for any tank you currently have.

Might I also suggest that you try and PM one of our members called nmonks, he's quite experienced with South American puffers and can tell you anything you need to know about keeping them. By the way they're freshwater not brackish.

I know that the clown will get to big for the 20 gal but as he is only 4" right now he is fine, when it is that I get the snails under control he will be moved to the 55 gal and when he gets to big for that he will be rehomed again.
